then I remembered you guys do nothing but catch Bass and Crappie, so you probably need all the inches you can get

i was born in fly-fishing's holy land i want to let you know. i come from willowemoc/beaverkill/esopus river country. careful talking about those low-life fish...mr. & mrs. wulff would disagree  ;)

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

That's where Boneaddicts and my ancestors started in this country from 1649.  Probably still some around. :)

Nice sharp picture.  I've got one that I consider a monster, or one of the biggest three points I drema about.  The pictures turned out ike crap.  It was my early years and I had my moms Canon AE1 with a 200mm lens.  It was typical dark and deary and early morning.  I was with Idabooner and we spottede this hawg.  I will dream of these antlers forever.   If you don't mind blur, i will scan them and get them in.

Look at the chest on that bugger.  I'm betting if he had a little upper forks, he'd be at the butcher right now.

Ok, I lied about my grandfathers deer.  It's not 39.5" wide, he meausured it today and it's 37.5" wide.  This is the biggest 3 pointer I've ever laid eyes on.  A truly unique deer that has a cheater on the deers left side and it has double eyeguards on each side.  He shot it at Harper Valley, Oregon on some ranch.  He said the deer was tiny and very young.  It think he told me it weighed no more than 150 pounds on the hoof.  The antlers looked huge on him compared to his body size.  The mount isn't great because he cut the throat.  (he was a meat hunter)  Maybe some day I'll shoot a little dink spike mulie and have Michelle cape it right.  Anyways, one I'm proud is in my family.

Again, not a muley but a decent 3pt blacktail I took years ago.

At the time I was working nights and I got off a couple hours early and went hunting with the plan of being home by noon so I would be able to work that night. It had been raining for a couple days and was monsooning all morning and I was hunting in and near a bedding areas but could not find any fresh tracks. I had been "still hunting" the "paternable" blacktails in Thurston Co. in the beginning of the second week of the season and I knew the pre rut was about to go full on. If I could find fresh tracks in the monsoon I would be in fat city, but no such luck. I was getting tired and soaked, actually I was tired of being soaked and decided to hunt my way back to the rig. I had one last spot to check but by the time I got there I was just plain tired. So I kinda half assed my way into this little pocket and I heard a moan. At first I thought it might be a bear, but I had already killed one (only allowed one back then). I decided to try to take a look and then go get one of my brothers. Then I heard it again and I realized that it was a doe bleating and she wasn't more than 30 yards from me. The rain was making alot of noise and I had a slight swirling wind, but in the thick brush/timber I wasn't too worried about it. I was able to duckwalk about ten yards closer and able to get behind a large firn and a small willow type tree. I saw parts of at least 2 does at 2 o'clock and about 20 yards away. At 12 o'clock and maybe 35 yards out I saw a glint of antler bobbing away from me. I raised my rifle, but the scope was soaked and I couldn't see. Quickly I half cupped my left hand and sucked/kissed my between my thumb and first finger. The rack stopped and then I saw the buck turn and come back about 5 yards. I was on my knees and as I raised my rifle I licked the glass to clear the rain and when I got on the buck I realised that he stopped behind a clump of hazel nut trees. I crawled a couple feet forward but could not get a bead on the body. I had a clear shot at the neck through the bushes but I did not have a real clear site picture due to the rain. I could not see the does, but they started to move off and hook to the left and straight away from me. The buck was getting antsy and started to stomp his hooves. With my rifle half raised I turned my head to the right and blew two quick kisses into the wind. That did it, the buck took two small steps forward and now his vitals were wide open... or so I thought. With my cross hairs tight behind his right shoulder I squeezed the trigger, the buck whirled and fell to the ground and the does took off in all directions. The buck was struggling a bit, but I did not have a clear shot so I slowly moved forward. When I got to the buck he was on his side, his rack stuck in the alder leaves and duff. He was bleeding heavily out the mouth and giving up the ghost. When I went to pull him around for a look I had to really pull on his antlers to get them out of the dirt. I got him rolled over to look at the damage, but there was no hole behind his shoulder. I looked again and then I found it, right behind the shoulder was a little piece of copper singed into the hair. I pondered a bit then took another look and then I noticed two holes in his neck. Two holes in his neck? What the? Two holes about a half an inch each only a half inch apart. Then I realised what happened. Somehow I hit branch and my bullet split in at least two pieces and the copper jacket just shattered. The end result was no blood shot or meat loss though I was a bit bummed when I got him home and weighed. I had to cut him in half and take him out in two trips (not far) but I coulda swore that he was 100 lbs a load. I was wrong, way wrong, he was only 170 lbs field dressed. I was so tired that I stopped by my brothers place to get help hanging and skinning and he was the one who took the pic. I am glad I did as the original photo turned out pretty good.

It was a very wet day, but that wet spot in the background is actually a small lake.
