Unit 335 - Teanaway

Anybody ever hunted in the 335 - Teanaway unit for elk?  Its about 30 minutes east of Cle-Elum and just north of highway 907.

I am going to give it a shot this weekend for the opener and wanted everyone's opinion.  Thanks!

It's tuff not the numbers you would want to see, you would be better off going south of I90 in 336 or 340. They don't have the true spike restriction to deal with also. I am not being biased either I am an archery hunter and spend almost all my time in 335. The teanaway is considered part of the colockum herd and has all the same restrictions. The south side of I90 is part of the Yakima herd, which has way better numbers.

As you can see, I live in the area.  Been out a bit in the last few weeks deer hunting and have seen very little elk sign this year compared to years past.  Not sure why.  I bow hunt so not trying to throw you off.  Taking my kid out this weekend and thinking up in the 340 unit myself.

There may be elk in the teanaway, but there are not very many of them.

I hunted it last year in the late archery and failed to find a single live elk (on public land).

My advice would be go south of I-90 where it seems (to me) that there are more elk.

yeah we hunted both weekends for deer in that area and i would say that dead zone is the word.
there really isnt much for deer either.
the old bulls that are in the area are grandfathers of the area.

This is because the Colockum GMU's as a whole is f'cked.  Unless the WDFW grows a pair or somehow developes a spine and does what needs to be done to get that herd back on track, it will continue to go down hill.  Currently the bull to cow ratio is 5:100.  That is a 1/3 of what it should be.  And that isnt' the mature bull to cow ratio that ratio includes 2 1/2 year olds as well.   So if you're looking at the 6pt per cow ratio it's more like 2:100. 

Don't let the WDFW try to fool all of you about it's health.  The goal is 4,000 to 4,500 animals.  The goal has been met.  The herd is still broken because the bull to cow ratio is f'cked.  Like I said until the WDFW does what needs to be done (despite the wishes of most hunters) this herd will continue to go down hill. 

I GUARANTEE YOU by 2013 you wont see ANY mature bulls in the Colockum.  Until they go to permit only and manage Tribal hunting, this herd will continue to go down hill fast.

OK, now picture everyone rolling on the floor and laughing hysterically! But sadly, it isn't funny at all. That's the irony. Tears and laughter together......how can this be?

Me thinks they have different plans and are controlled by those without a pair and are spineless. Thus the saying - 'it's all about the money'. Perhaps?

When you have organizations like Kittitas County Field and Stream who stonewall any and all enhancement projects that are tried the department can't get anywhere. There have been multiple times when WDFW tried to limit access in the Colockum unit and it was shut done by the aforementioned group. I don't understand how any conservation organization could be so adamant about destroying an elk herd!! The WDFW with some help other than KCFS could get something done but there needs to be someone to initiate the action. They are doing a study up there now with collared cows but I am not sure of the details.

I have had a few run ins with the KCFS club.  They are a hunting club masquerading as a conservation organization.  If they had it their way you could drive all over there would only be a rifle season and it would be any elk.  It wouldn't surprise me if they blocked any WDFW attempt at limiting access.  After my speech last year at the meeting in E-burg more than a few member of the KCFS had some not so nice words to say to me. 

That being said the WDFW could still tell them to f'ck off and do what needs to be done.  I understand the RMEF has bought alot of land etc in the Colockum.  I'm hoping they do some good things up there.  Brandon do you have any contact info of the local RMEF chapter so I can talk to them.  Show them some of the research I've done.  Hopefully RMEF up there can do alot of good.

With proper management, it is basically a 'birth right'. Problem is - it isn't being managed properly. Neither are most corporations here in America! Has our game department succumbed to corporatism? Our politicians certainly have.
