First Yote
« on: October 26, 2009, 09:54:47 PM »
So I was deer hunting in the Umptanum area the other day and I came up to the edge of this draw and out the bottom and up the other side goes this gray streak at about 100 mph. I figure its a coyote by its general size and shape but at this point its just a blur. The poor guy has about 500 yards to go before he makes it to any cover so I grab my shooting sticks... get them set up... dial the scope up... sit down...steady the 7mm-08... flick the safety... and then I find him in the scope. He finally stops for a breath at about 300 yards,(i've never shot this far with this gun) and sure enough, its a coyote. He's quarterd uphill and away from me so I put the cross hairs on his back right above the back of his ribcage and squeeze one off. Theres a cloud of a dust and a coyote tumbline end over end... over end.... over end....... over end down the hill most of the way back down to the bottom. I shot him about 300 y ards out and only had to walk about 100 yards to get to him. I don't have a bunch of experience with these guys but I think he's a pretty good sized dog. I'd estimate him in the 30-40# range. I skinned him out for a buddy who wanted the hide, but there was about a grapefruit sized hole where his front shoulder used to be. Glad to see my handloads were accurate!
I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.

Pretty cool feeling huh! the sad part is if that was a deer it would not have happened that easy,  I've figured out that if you pretend that a deer is a dog they drop first maybe second shot! I've busted dogs at ridiculous distances not sure if I could have killed deer at that same distance? something about pressure.
