Whitetail in Entiat?
« on: November 02, 2009, 02:58:20 PM »
Hey guys,
I was hunting in the entiat this year with my old man and we came across a couple whitetail bucks walking across an open hillside, I remembered in the regs that it was any whitetail buck but just kind of laughed when I saw it cuase i've never seen a whitey in there.  I ended up shooting the smaller one (3point) but just was wondering how many of these there are up there?  any thoughts. By the way, my dads gun misfired on the 4 point.

There are a few.  Wea300 got a few on film on his raffle hunt a couple years ago.

Great job.  Too bad your dad didn't get the other buck.  I hope they stay somewhat localized in this unit. :twocents:

I have seen them in 246 just off the border with the entiat.  I am from Texas originally, and I would advise all Washington hunters to kill every whitetail in these muley units.  Whitetails are very adaptive and prolific.  They will take over the winter range and begin to edge out the muleys over time.

I don't think the few whiteys we have can eat as much of the muleys winter range as the end of the year control burns that get away from the forest circus every fall. I'm just saying!

Your right Moparman but if you let the WT establish themselves they will start to take over and with their more aggressive nature during the rut when most of the Mulies are in the small area well I guess I'm just saying too. Seen more and more WT in the Wheat country over the past couple years when pheasant hunting where we only had seen a couple here and there 5 years ago.

As a kid growing up we seldom saw whitetail in the Okanogan anywhere near our property. Over that last 15-20 years the whiteys are really taking hold. We do what we can to keep them in check taking a couple a year from out place ;) when things work right. Anyone who has followed the deer in this country know what the whitetail will do over time. I would not be surprised to see them on the west side in my lifetime if the wolves do get them all...then again that may get them here faster :dunno:

The end of the year control burns are exactly what the mule deer population need whether they jump their lines or not!  Not just the mule deer either.  Just sayin!
