Scope rings - educate me

My dad has a new SS/composite Remington 700 300 winmag that needs a scope.  I think we might get him a scope and rings for Xmas.  Pretty much settled on a Leupold VXII 3-9x40 with matte finish.  I don't know jack about rings though.  Standard Leupold?  steel or aluminum? or are the Tally rings with 4 screws better?

Id go with a four screw ring set. I personaly use leupolds but talley and waren are good too. alum vs steel is just a weight thing to me

If you want to spend some money order some EAW swing mounts lol. they are not only expensive but they need to be placed by a gun smith who has been taught houw to do them. over here that will cost you about 470 euros(650$)

Unless your dad is a Leupold fan, there are other scopes you may want to consider and save a lot of $.

Thanks.  The DNZ looks good, the integrated base idea is a good one to avoid skewing and lapping.  A little bulky on the straps is my only dislike.

In my opinion Talley makes the best rings for the money, Leupold is also good but talley is a little better quality. You can find Talley rings and bases online for around $40. I put a set on my Sako and on my Weatherby they look great.

Use a good quality brand name and you will be fine.  All mentioned are good.  I use basic Leupolds 90% and have used all different kinds over the years.  Personally I mount them so the scope sits where it needs to with a cheek/stock weld that is natural for that gun/person.  Try as hard as you can to make the equipment fit you not the other way around.  By mounting lower or higher then where they should be causes physical effort to get a full view.  Any physical adjustment in your position that has to be made and then maintained will affect your ability to shoot accurately.  Where the scope is mounted in relation to the bore is irrelavant for shooting.  It has to fit then learn your trajectory for the reticle mounting height and everything after that is simple.  I put a small amount of rubber cement on the rings just to get a good grip.  Use a solid bar for alignment and after the lower half is as true as you can get it then mount scope.

I just got a Weatherby mark V ultra Lightweight in 257 Wby Mag I put the Talley Vanguard lightweight mounts on it its a sweet setup at a cheap price!
