I like them close as well but usually my shots average out to about 150. Last year I believe my closest was 60ish.

the terrain has alot to do with it,as you know.In SE Idaho the area had alot of moguls and dips and such.I would set up down in those.Guys I would take out couldn't believe how close and hard they would come..Soon as I spot one I put the cross hairs on its face and follow it till the dog realizes there is something there,They stop for a brief moment,then I dot their eye..When the magpies come in and flair that's usually the same distance the odor hound will see ya..Damn I miss the high desert

Have shot a few over 200 yds, but most of my shots under 50 yds with a rifle. I usually hunt in thick stuff or on edges. With a bow, a partner calling  and homemade Gilli suit, about 20 yds. Use a very soft sounding mouse squeaker to bring in under 50 yds.

I pretty much hunt wheat fields for yotes. They sometimes come charging but like I said they often have up at about 1-200 to check things out.

I don't like them close, too much chance of me screwing up, and contrary to my user name I don't use a shotgun. I'm out there to shoot coyotes. Shot one at about 10 feet a couple of weeks ago from the hip. My sweet spot is anywhere between 100 and 250 yrds. These pups this year are hard to stop, you could let them come in right on top of you if that's what you wanted. Of course that'll change pretty quick.

i dont useaully read the long shot post. mainly deer and elk. big turnoff. how many animal's were wounded. i understand in eastern washington the later it get's in the year the tougher they come in. i enjoy close up using my hand call's.my wife bought me a $1600.00 berreta extrema 2 shotgun for my birthday. it's what all the big caller's use in the desert state's. i have lot's of dead coyote and number 4 buckshot. cant wait to break it in. sunday if i would of had the shotgun on second stand would of had a nice adult coyote was to close. I want to learn to do this......mostly because where I typically hunt if you are lucky you can see 50yds, usually I get myself in where I cant see my own damn feet.

I like the #4 buck shot give a good patter through the turkey choke i got.. I bought a Singshot/buck shot mold from the Do-it Corp and loaded up some #1-#0 with it. Havent put those through the turkey choke yet but my bro-inlaw says they put the SMACK down on those yotes!

I met the world calling champions from several year's ago the Shippy's out of Elko nevada. they have a shotgun on there lap and Rifle on shooting stick's. they hunt the stick stuff. heading i hope to the coast for elk hunting. Runamuk or or any one else maybe call when i get back. got 4 call order's today figure's. in 86 i called my first bobcat in at 100 yards wouldnt come closer. a 1/2 later called a old male coyote right to me shot him at under 5 yards very close. the close one's are fun. miss the old day's. I do not know why I want to call them close may have to do with so many unexpected close situations with wild critters, I think it would be fun to actually be prepared for it rather than stumble over them....lol

i like them close to. i carry a shotgun and a rifle that way if they hang up under 250 they are toast or if they come within 60 my shotgun will eat them up love that 4 buck and tight choke.

Across the board, I love calling game...and to me, I get the most enjoyment/challenge in getting them in as close as possible.  I'm a bowhunter and have only taken one big game animal with my 30-06, an elk, at age 15.  I love the close contact and thrill of animals in close.  I could probably fill a dump truck with elk and deer I didn't shoot but were inside my self-regulated 35 yard bow range.  You can't tie a tag on the thrill of close encounters, but that's ok.  It's still rewarding for me.  I don't tag as many animals as those who hunt with multiple weapons, but that's ok.  I get out of it what I want to get out of it, and that's all that matters to me.

Its tuff on this side to get as many animals.I do see many people here calling from the road in trucks or standing next to them.I have a feeling that these critters here are more educated to the calls,because of this.But as the weather turns very cold these same wary call smart animals,are hungry and have to eat more to sustain the energy lost to the colder tempts,thus they will come in.Just my op on this,works in my mind...

well said rasbo that just what i think to, way to many stand next to there trucks and blow a call and then you have the ones that get a yote coming in and start blazin at him at 400 yards that yote is not comin in again to that call we find using a howl and pup distress works very well in areas that have had the piss calles out of it

Fair enough...not trying to derail the thread or "rant" about anything.  Not sure how you interpreted my comment that way.  Just stating my desire to call animals in close, which included coyotes and a few bears. Don't get too ruffled up about it, ok?

The closer the better for me.  I'll pass up shots in the 100-200 range in hopes of getting them into 5-10 yards for the fun of it.  It results in less kills, but more fun.  I just try to read their body language to gauge what my odds are for getting them closer. 

I had one a few weeks ago come in within the first 30 seconds and offer me a standing 90 yard shot.  I passed on it hoping it would come closer.  Needless to say, as soon as I let out a lip squeek, it proceeded to turn tail and run directly away from me at mach 1.  It was gone before I could get on it.  I was surprised, that is usually their reaction later in the year, not in October.

Shot my first one of the year a few weeks ago at 40 feet. Was watching him in my scope at about 50 yds running straight at me, he stopped and i popped him, dropped the rifle down and looked and he was right there.

I typically seem to get them into about 35 yards, where they will circle on me.  I like them out at 100 or so yards though, when they stop and stare, makes it easier for a shot then one circling.  The closest I've had was one sniffing my boot, also near Royal City about 10 yrs ago, I called it in from about 500 yards, and could have shot it at 100 or so, but decided to just sit still and see how far it would come.  It walked right to my foot, sniffed it, growled, then I proceded to miss it with my 223, after a few 4 letter words were yelled.
