Oregon Archery Antelope. questions?????
« on: November 06, 2009, 12:53:43 PM »
Anybody hunt Archery Antelope in Oregon before. My brother and I were checking my points this morning and I have enough to draw the unit of my choice this coming year.

Any suggestions on which unit would offer best opportunity for a triple biggame species hunt. Deer, Elk and Antelope.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

How many points do you have? Deer and elk are going to be over the counter. Pronghorn odds are horrible at best. Especially in good deer/elk areas. Good luck.

I have 10 points. We checked last years draws and the two best units were drawn by nonresidents with 8 points and 6 points. If that holds true I should be 100 percent at least for one of the units that have an archery 'lope hunt.

Looks like the Malheur would be good as I have hunted it several times for Mule deer and it holds allot of elk and a good amount of 'lope also.

i would not hold my breath about it being 100% chance. one of my friends has 13 points for antelpoe, and has not drew a tag yet. just because the points per drawing were low does not mean you will get it for sure. and from what i have seen from the draw usally it takes alot more than 6-8 points to get the 2 best tags which includes hart mt. i seem to think the points were higher to get one of the better tag :dunno:

My dad drew the Steens Mtn Rifle Antelope tag with just 1 or 2 points. :dunno:

Looking at the numbers If I apply for one of the lesser units that I can hunt all three species in I feel confident that I should draw with the way Oregon's system works.

I'll have 11 points going into next years draw. Oregon is sooo nonres UNfriendly it's rediculous and now they are raising there prices. This might be good as a lot of guys may drop out of the system and opt for Montana and Wyoming. Both of which are cheaper and easier to draw a pronghorn tag in. I know that you CAN NOT hunt with a bow during a firearm deer/elk season. You need to call F & W to see if it's ok during antelope season.

I will be applying for archery antelope and buying archery deer and elk tags. Then, if I get drawn for antelope, I will take off two weeks for a juicy three species archery hunt. That is why I believe I can get drawn next year for antelope because last year two of the better , not best, unit had non-res. draw with 6 points and 8 points. If somebody with less than ten points that is a non-res applies for the same archery 'lope tag as me, I will be a lock for the permit. :dunno:

Let us know how that works out for you. How do you know there isn't 20 people with more points than you putting in for the same unit?  I'll be curious to see if you draw or not. Like I said, let us know and good luck.

Ya,  I know a potentially great area for all three species.  Not sure if there are any non-res tags in the unit, but there were 2 hooter bucks, and I flat screwed it up 5 yrs ago when I hunted them as a resident.  Reply PM and I will let you know what I learned.  Amazing place up in the mountains, plenty deer and elk sign, and there were two good bunches of lopes up high.

Oregon's system works on who has the highest point total. If a nonresident drew last year with 6 and 8 points that means they had the highest point total for all nonresident applicants for antelope in those two units. If a nonresident applies next year with more than 10 points than of course I will be out. They are required to give out a percent to nonresidents. So I am only competing against nonresidents. We are basing this info on the hunt statistics that are on the Oregon website right now for who drew tags last year. In those units that had nonresident tags available for archery hunters that is how it was listed for those people who drew tags. The NR tags were drawn with that many points.
