« on: November 12, 2009, 06:26:45 AM »
I have a new Canon which has this stupid Error 99 message that pops up all the time.Any help. When the message pops up I have to turn it off, pull the battery and restart the camera.I might get a picture or 5 or none.
This pisses Me off.I am just about to send it back to canon for warranty. But thought Id ask here first.

I think your shutter is failing.  Definitely send it back if it's on warranty.  Error 99 is a generic error message that could be the camera failing to make contact with the lens or some other issue.  For me it was the shutter and it happened like you are describing until it wouldn't take any more pictures.  It's a fairly common problem with Canon cameras, especially the 40D.

No, they replace the shutter on mine with a newer good one that is reported to be more robust.  Early 40D cameras all have this problem.

It may not be the camera. My 18-55mm kit lens had the chip go bad and the camera did this. I changed lenses and it works with no issues. You might try a different lens before sending in the camera just to make sure. :twocents:

My 20D started this problem a few weeks after I put a 17-55 efs lens on.  For me, I think it's the IS contacts.  I took an eraser and brush the contacts on the lens.  Haven't had that messages come up yet so far.  If your lens has IS, try to turn it off to see if the message comes back.
