Scope Recommendations for Yotes?
« on: November 13, 2009, 08:58:49 AM »
I'm planning for a yote package--winchester 70 coyote light in .243--and I was wondering about suggestions for scopes. I have a 3X9 Leupold VXI on my BLR but was thinking of switching it out for a fixed-power scope.

If I did that, is the 3X9 adequate/appropriate for the purpose?

What kind of scope would you recommend if the 3X9 is less suited for yotes?

The 3-9 will work. I prefer something a little hugher though, with a top end of 12-16.

I think you need to define what type of terrain you will be doing most of your hunting in, or what distance you plan on getting the coyotes in when you decide to shoot. I have 3X9X40, 4.5X14X42, 6.5X20X44 and 6.5X20X50 scopes. I usually keep mine on 8X but I hunt on open country and crank it up quite often. I think your 3X9 would work just fine, especially if you're not particularly wanting to buy another scope.

The one I'm looking at right now is the  Leupold VX 3 6.5-20x50mm long range target. I am figuring on Max. 500 yd shots but focusing on same hole 300 yd shots. I figure that any yote that can smell me is dead.  :chuckle:

3-12, 4.5-14 and 4-16 are good all-around variables.  I personally like the 40-44mm objectives... makes a little more compact package.

as said before alot depends on the terrain and your style of hunting. most of my hunting could almost be done with a fixed 4. ive actually thought of useing a leupold vxIII 1.5x5. now that said both my rifles have 2,5x10's

My :twocents:
I've never turned my scope past 9x in a hunting situation. East side or west side. I shoot a 4-16x40. The only time it's been up over 9x is when I'm checking targets.
I think a 3-9 would do anything you would need.

x2

or a 6-18x50mm i like the 50mm helps pick up a movin target better i can get away with a scope that won't turn down as much because if its to close for 6 power the 12gauge that i carry will work on them :chuckle:

Carp is right, 50mm helps tremendously on moving targets, and yotes are usualyl moving. I use the same thing I use for deer/elk, Leupold VX-II 3-9x50mm

I like to call them in close and hunt alot of heavier cover.  Most of my coyote guns carry low power variables.

22H- 2x7 Weaver

218 Bee- K-1.5 Weaver

222 Rem - K-3 Weaver

22-204 - 1.6x6 Sightron II

6x45mm- 1x4 VX-II Leupold

6mm-204 - 1.5x4.5 Nikon Monarch

250 Savage- 1.25x4 Elite 4200

I have higher power scopes for load developing but really like the wide FOV that these scopes provide.  I practice regularly to 300 yrds with these,  I keep the scopes on the lowest power for the ones that pop out of the brush  at your feet, theres plenty of time to crank up the power if they are out a ways.

Must be doing something right this is one weeks hunt, back from the tannery.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.
