Does anyone know if the gates will be open again in the fossil creek area for the late archery elk bow hunt?  Thanks

I am wondering the same thing.  We have three muzzle cow permits and plan on camping for two weeks in the area.  The insight would be helpfull,  not being an archery hunter I am never in that area this time of year.

aceseal-  I got your PM and we will be leaving the gates open the same as last year on the Grays River tree farm.  The mainlines 7000 and 7200 are open, but most of the spurs are red dot roads and are walk in only, even if the gate is open....just look at the signs.....I know a couple guys who got popped for driving in our red dots in the early archery season and the criminal tresspass fine was 1000 bucks each when they went to court in Long Beach.

....a somewhat related question. Does anyone know if the mainline out of Pe Ell is open? I seem to recall it was washed out and hadn't been repaired.

Anyone know about camping in any tree farms? Its hell to find an area these days without paying.
We used to stay on the 600/700 system off wildwood road. Gates are always open but no camping or atv.

Thanks Mr Goodwrench.

Jumpin...this doesn't really answer your question, but Rainbow Falls State Park is a little East of Pe Ell. I haven't stayed there, but it looked like a pretty nice campground and there were quite a few hunters staying there last time I drove through.

Saw 3 nice groups of elk today. Each group had bulls in it. All were bedded down out in the open. I am sure by next week they will be pushed back into the timber...

How busy is the Cathlamet side of the Willapa Hills unit during the late archery season? Trying to find a decent area to arrow a cow (not too picky). I'm willing to hike or Mt bike in a ways if I need to. Also, where could I get ahold of a map of the area? Thanks.

 Maybe I should have started out by saying that I somewhat know the area, just never hunted it. My dad has property out on Puget Island so I spend a lot of time during the summer down there fishing. And yeah, I know there are no elk down there... :chuckle:

There are a couple map sources I know of...

The Twin Harbors South map (Weyerhaueser) covers the northern half of the Willapa Hills unit
Arnolds Map Service in Vancouver, WA has a map of the unit
LC Sportsmaps carries a map of the unit (I haven't bought any of their maps before)
