High winds..worth hunting in them?
« on: November 20, 2009, 07:46:08 PM »
ok..i know that it is good to have some wind moving across your deeks when hunting.  but looks as if tomorrow where we plan on going is going to be quite windy.  supposedly 25-30 mph, but it's a lake that has trees around the outer edges.  i know we won't feel the full speed of the winds, but do you guys think its worth hunting in these high winds?
 :dunno:

thanks

High winds can give you some of the best hunting if you know how to hunt them and have a good spot. here are a few tips i have for you.

1. Location, Location, Location, find a place on the pond that the wind is a little less intense. Ducks have to go to water, and they will fill up the places that the wind is not blowing them all over hell and creation.

2. Use the wind yo your advantage. the ducks will have to fight the wind and this will make them almost seem to hover right in from of you. Place your decoys up wind of you and you should have ducks hovering right in front of your face. This does not always work but it is how i start my spread every time. Well, if the wind is blowing left to right or vice versa. If it's blowing right in your face hunting is going to be tough.

3. Choose a duck and stick with it until it dies. After that first shot the birds will catch that wind and be gone. Your not going to have as much time to shoot as you do on calm days.

If given the chance to hunt calm or windy days i will take the wind every time. I have had some great shoots in the wind. Do your homwork and find out where the ducks go when the wind blows. Once you have that down your going to slay them.

Back when I hunted ducks and geese we loved the wind. Those buggers fly low and if you jump shoot they take off into the wind and the wind really slows them up so you have plenty of time to take aim. All we did was jump shoot so I'm not sure about decoying them but jump shooting in the wind was fantastic

High winds equals quick limits.  Birds constantly on the move.  Find a smaller area somewhat out of the wind for your decoys and get ready.  Man I used to pray for high wind days when I lived in the Basin.  Just didn't get any better.  ;)

I dream of high wind days.  They best hunting, the ducks don't all raft up on the bays and they are flying good.  I have a bag a decoys for high wind.  8oz weight with weighted keels.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!
