Late hunt Frustration!
« on: December 09, 2009, 08:36:24 PM »
Well I have been hunting (deer and elk) a lot in the last 4 or 5 days and I have not seen an animal, this is the worst stretch I have had.  I have walked gated logging roads, walked in a majority of my honey holes, (like walking on patatoe chips) and also covered a lot of ground in the pickup.    Finally today I took a break and only lasted till 3 pm and decided to go jump some ducks on the river, one green head, my first kill of 09'.  Hunting the damage unit for elk in the morning.  Anyone else having late hunt blues?

I know how you feel..With the areas that I have hunted I should of had a deer by now..I have seen a few, and a few elk ( no tag for elk, plus closed in my area). I'm going to hunt some local areas from here on out..

Me too. I don't like good weather when I hunt. Still have an archery tag for elk. I passed up two of them early on in the late season. I only wanted a yearling or calf and two different huge cows stood in my way. Might not pass them up next time if I even go out. It is too dry and cold for this fella.

I hear ya!  This is the first year in many that I didn't get a late season whitie.  My honey hole was covered with cougar and coyote tracks and no sign of deer.  My back up spot only held does and dink bucks that were nervous because of cats.  My buddy and I pulled a hail Mary and rode horses in and then hiked 1 1/2 miles to an old honey hole to come up empty handed.  To add a final slap in the face this guy was waiting for us at the horses and eating their hay!  :dunno:  I couldn't get a shot off with my bow because he had us dead to rights but I did sneak a pic.  What a frustrating year!  I still have time to find a nice blacktail buck.
This guy will be on my list next year or the year after.  Note the alfalfa hanging out of its mouth.

Thanks, I really wanted to let the air out of him but with him on me at 70 yards (farther than I will fling an arrow at a critter) and no way to put a sneak on him it wasn't gonna happen!   :'(

Well tis the season (hunting season that is) I feel a little better, except the fact some of you are seing animals.  Great pic and small story polarbear, ya just never know what will happen or show up.  I wanna say I hate blue skys and sunshine, ok well I do.  Born and raised here in skagit valley and I love cloudy sky's and damp air.  Gonna act like its not crunchy in the morning and just go into every little honey hole in the damage unit stealth like and just maybe jump an animal or two or more or, or, or, or, nothing, what'a ya do, if you don't check you don't know.  Alecvg that is Baker, taken from up the south side of the skagit.  They're logging heavy and gate was open monday, took a spur road and got some great looking hunting, hence looking but unfortuntly crunchy.  Well off to bed, and maybe this Frustrated thread will turn into an animal down thread.

Crunchy snow, blue bird days, a full moon on clear cold nights spell disaster for hunting deer!  Like they say, timing is everything.

I'm right there with you.  I have two deer hunting buddies that I'm trying hard to get on deer.  I passed on a couple deer in the early muzzleloader season because I was alone and knew if I tagged out they likely wouldn't hunt without me.  These guys are older than me and have kids that will soon be of hunting age, I really want to get them and their kids hooked.  Fast forward to the late season and neither of them have been able to hunt due to work and family plans.  Last weekend sucked with the frigid blue bird weather and full moon.  Hoping the warm up and precipitation comes this weekend and maybe I'll get lucky.  Kicking myself now for not taking a deer in Oct.

Well, there is your problem, the elk herds are impossible to find up there!  Maybe got a chance at deer, but the elk will be darn hard unless you have had them scouted out and know where they are.  The move all over the place in that unit!  Goodluck.
