.204 Ruger Reloading...
« on: December 18, 2009, 06:00:30 PM »
Anyone reloading for their .204 want to share their recipes?  I have been searching the net looking for a starting point using 32gr V-Max bullets and XMR 2015.  Closest I have come is from Sierra for their 32gr Blitz King.  Main reason for the XMR 2015 is that I have some.  :)

One thing I have noticed is that the ballistics for the Hornady factory ammo with 32gr V-Max are a bit higher than most published load data @ 4225 fps.

Accurate is the manufacturer.  It used to be called 2015BR.

If it is accurate is it now AA2015. If that is the case you should start out at 24gr and work up.

I just did some more research and I am right on the money. It shows that the max is 26gr but we all know that is not the true max if you can stay accurate. Seems like there are more powders that you could get better velocity out of but if that is what you like than go for it.

The Sierra data shows XMR 2015 @ a max load of 27gr for the 32gr BK @ 3900fps.

Thanks for your research.  I may end up trying n140 or RL 10x.  Funny how Accurate load data is different than Sierra's for the same powder and same weight bullet.  I found this site that shows a bunch of load data from different manufacturers.

What kind of barrel and length are you shooting Lowedog?  Personally, I've had no luck shooting the higher end loads (max fps) out of my 204.  If I stick right around 3600, I group well at extended ranges.  My rifle is an ultralight with a 22" barrel though.  I have friends that also downsize their loads with 26" barrels due to accuracy.  Also, the 40gr. bullets in my opinion far outweigh the 32's in all aspects.  I cased up on factory hornady ammo that shoots great out of my rifle, so I haven't reloaded yet.  40gr. v-max.  I have two friends with the same rifle that have started reloading for it and I believe they shoot IMR3031.  They've developed a load that shoots identical to the factory hornadys and are very happy with it.

Shooting a CZ 527 Varmint, 24" heavy barrel.  Actually just had my first trip to the range with it today.  It grouped the factory Hornady 32gr V-Max well out to 300 yards but they are expensive!  Haven't tried the 40 grainers yet.

I hear you on the high price!  Fortunately, I purchased my cases the first year of introduction.  I think if you try the 40's you'll be equally happy if not more impressed.  I've found that the only difference between the factory 32's and 40's in my gun at up to 450 yds, is that the 40's are more stable and tend to hold a tighter group......especially with a slight breeze.  Also, I've found no more pelt damage with the 40's.
