yotes while turkey hunting
« on: December 21, 2009, 06:48:32 PM »
OK so has any one had any dogs come in while you were calling for turkeys and did you shoot them?
twice now I was set up on turkeys and had them come in right on top of me but was to concerned about the turkeys to pull the trigger. the first time me and a Friend were set up and he had two of them about 10 feet away on his right hand side, the second me and my cousin were set up and we had two come rite between us and the third stopped rite in front of my cousin with his head about two feet from his barrel. he said he wouldn't of even had to move just pull the trigger and it woulda been a dead dog.so lets gere the story's

Yes, I've had one come in.  We stared each other down for a few seconds at about 25 yards apart.  I was tempted, but I didn't smoke him.  Same thing happened once while I was deer hunting (I think that I was using a fawn distress call).  Once again, tempted, but didn't pull the trigger.

Hey Carl,

You may find this hard to believe, simply I guess, cause it's coming from me maybe :chuckle:

But, I hunt a ranch that has hundreds of turkeys on it and I have watched coyotes meander through the turkeys in search of mice. It's crazy, or am I crazy  :dunno: I dunno, but anyway it's really sumptin to watch. Kind of a Kodak moment for sure, but the dogs leave them twenty pound  :crap: *censored*tin' machines alone . Maybe it's just the "power in numbers" sort of thing, what'cha think :o

Yes- We pulled up on the side of the road and walked about 50yds to the canyon edge and called trying to locate a Tom. About ten minutes pass and a coyote runs out in the draw below us. I went back to the truck and grabbed my 22-250 and the range finder. He was still there when I got back and I ranged him at 485yds. My partner said to hold right on him because it was a steep shot. I shot and he started flopping around. I shot 12 more times and he finally laid still. We went down there and I took my shotgun thinking that with my dumb luck if I brought the rifle, A Tom would run right in front of me. We got about 20 ft away and the coyote jumped up at us so I let him taste a 3.5inch  turkey load. That finished him. Come to find out I only hit him with the first rifle shot and it took out both front knees. He must have played dead after another dozen rounds came flying by.

Heck ya. Once a dog came in really close, then winded me and hopped around in front of me and barked, trotted out to 50 yards maybe, and turned and barked again....everytime he turned to go, I would start yelping again, then he would bark all pissed at me..... I never shot figuring he was out too far...

i had a coyote come in bout 35 yards while turkey hunting this spring.  didnt pull the trigger cause i was a little worried about the shot i had loaded and didnt want to spook off any birds that may have been nearby.  in hindsight i wish i woulda dropped the dog cause we never saw or heard a bird all day.

My self and Cougkilr were hunting turkeys 4 or 5 years ago up at my uncles and the 1st set we did  I called in 3 dogs and shot the last 1 with 3" turkey loads. I have called in some since but didn't shot them.

Cougkilr called in a wolf few years ago but I'll let him tell the story.

Hell I dunno Gary, I shot a coyote one time came in with 3 mule deer.?? In Montana I was set up shooting prarie dogs. Was ranging some mounds at about 400 yards. Got the 22-250 Target Tikka set up and looked thru the scope. I had shot less than a minute earlier, there was a coyote walking thru the Pdog town about 250 yards out!! Who knows?
I   think animals can tell when the coyotes are hunting or just crusing. Anyway bottom line for me is simple, like me! :P, "see coyote, shoot coyote"

Was set up and calling to a flock of Toms through the woods.  Had them coming in for over a half hour.  One hen deke out in front of us.  Saw the coyote staring at the hen so I pointed my gun at him thinking about it.  Decided that I didn't want to lose a chance at the Toms.  The coyote charged the decoy and then ran off.  Seconds later 5 Toms and 2 Jakes came through the trees right towards us.  Opening day 07 I think.  Glad I didn't shoot the dog.

I usually shoot at least one over a decoy every year.  I think that is one of their main dishes in the Cheney area where I usually hunt turkeys.  I never let them walk.

I shot one this spring while calling in a tom for a buddy of mine. #4 lead out of a 10 ga at 30 yrds, never thought to take a pic. Female, kinda felt bad as I'm sure she had pups. Shot the dad the next day.  :chuckle:
