Calls--Electronic or Nonelectronic?
« on: December 24, 2009, 10:10:38 AM »

So, I have no idea how to call yotes with my reed caller. I just get out there and honk. I haven't gone out enough to really feel like I'm doing it wrong, either. But, still--no yotes after a couple of trips.

My wife has given me a couple of hints that sum up to a spending spree at Cabelas for Christmas. So, as I'm weighing all my options, I'm wondering: How effective are the reed calls for yotes compared to electronic? Assume the user knows what he/she is doing with the reed call.

Is the price for a FoxPro really worth it? Or am I better off just buying an instructional CD and learning with that and experience?

Thanks in advance (and merry Christmas).

All of the above. Reed calls work great, closed and open both work great, Foxpro works Great!

the thing about the foxpro is the call is away from you so the prey look at it not you. and the sounds are perfect.

Ive called in lots of coyotes with both and use them intermintenly I wouldnt spend the money on an e caller unless you convinced that you relly wanna be a predator hunter. I ve had good success with one of bearmanrics open reed calls, its called in many coyotes and sounds great it also is a pretty good cow elk call

Sounds like you'd benefit from getting a e-call.  Both calls can work great.  Try watching as many coyote hunting videos as you can and see the different calling techniques the pro's use.   It takes a lot of practice with mouth calls, so don't become discouraged too quick.  Maybe the e-caller will teach you a few things about calling in your neck of the woods, and you can incorporate both the e-caller and mouth calls.  Going out with a few seasoned guys would be your best bet, and there are quite a few on this site.  Good Luck!

Well put.
I would get out when you can with the hand calls. See if the investment for an E-call is worth it for you.

Guys have been hand calling for years before e-callers came out. Handcalling is very rewarding when you call a coyote in as you have used your own abilities to make it happen. There are many advantages to handcalling in that a few calls on a lanyard is all you need to pack around, no batteries to charge, e-caller quits working etc.. The most things that could happen to a handcall is you either lose it, the reed splits or freezes up. The handcall setup is much faster since you don’t need to run out the e-caller out and take the chance of more exposure. I just bought a FoxPro about 4 weeks ago so I have limited experience with a Fox-Pro. I’m very impressed with the quantity and quality of the available sounds but the biggest advantages for a e-caller I see is when using a handcall the coyote is oriented on the sound origin which is you, but when a coyote is oriented on the FoxPro they don’t have a clue that you’re even there until it’s too late, also the e-caller placement, when in tight places you can setup the e-caller to a more advantageous position than you might be able to when handcalling. I’ll probably never quit handcalling but the e-caller seems to have a definite advantage for both sounds and location when calling, especially for someone just starting out. Just make sure you always take a handcall with you. So I guess what I’m trying to say is either way will work but having the tools to take best advantage of any situation requires a combination of both types of calling if you decide that predator hunting is for you.

Like has been said a foxpro or other high quality e caller  is great they get the sound away from where you are and theres a lot of sounds to choose from. As for mouth calls they work great to but you have to be very alert and stay very still. I take both when I go out so if the batterys cut out or something I have a mouth call for back up or to stop a incoming yote.

I have been using both for years ,
I think its very important to start with hand calls alone and learn how to CALL coyotes before starting to use a e caller . ( just my opinion) .

it will make you a much better caller . Getting out in the field with a professional caller and having them teach you the dos and don,t of both types of calling as well as how and where to set up and locate coyotes is worth its weight in gold and will shorten your learning curve.as well as prevent you from becoming frustrated and not educate the population . I have been offering educational guided hunts for a number of years , I don,t know if i can give you any information on here but if your interested in learning the Proper techniques you can email me with a phone number and we can talk , here is my email address kmalbeck@eltopia.com .
