Weirdest thing you ever found in a fish's stomach?
« on: December 24, 2009, 06:30:04 PM »
Just was wondering the weirdest thing anyone has ever found in a salmon/steelheads stomach. Ive caught lots of fish with the usual needle fish, herring, crab larva, shrimp/prawns, stone flies in summer runs, curred roe, died prawns, and once I caught a bass with a 3inch long water beetle in it. I didnt think they got that big around here.

Anyway I caught a coho off the beach this last july on a mini buzz bomb. It was a decent 9-10lb fin cliped fish so it came home. While I was cleaning it I noticed it stomach was looking pretty full. When I cut it open I was expecting to see some needle fish and herring, but all it had in it gut was balled up alder leaves. Not just one but 3 of them. Kinda weird for a fish running around in the salt. Anyone else ever seen this?  :dunno:

Alder leaves? That is strange.

I knew a guy who caught a big sucker with a "rubber" in it's stomach. :dunno:

Not in the stomache, but I once caught an 18" rainbow with my uncle's fly in its lip.  I released the fish, gave him back his fly, then proceeded to irritate him the rest of the day telling him how fun it was to catch that fish.  All was forgiven though when i pitched the cap off the bottle of Ols Sheepdip.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

That is weird. maybe it was trying the new green diet or something. My dad caught a trout with a mouse in its stomach years ago.

There are mouse flies tied for that reason. Usually tied with deer hair. I have never seen anything weird in the fishes stomachs, Just the things they eat (naturally).

Caught a rainbow once that had a rubber worm in its stomach. Also caught a large mouth that had a pasty white sunfish sticking out of its throat.

My wife caught a 10 lb lingcod.  When it puked up its guts on the deck out popped 4 eight inch herring and a chunk of octopus arm about seven inches by an inch and a half.  The funny thing was, two of the herring had double hook rigs on them, both were tied with the same funky knot indicating someone else lost this fish twice.  :chuckle:

I shot a common merganser drake with a 10" spiny ray digesting in its belly....

I caught a smallie that coughed up a rubber worm.  That's not really uncommon.  What made it strange was it was the same type of worm we were using.  Probably picked it up off the bottom or could have been one of the fish we missed while dropshotting the slough that was nearby earlier that day.
