Don't put your bear skulls to close to the wood stove...
« on: December 24, 2009, 10:34:35 PM »
The pictures didn't turn out and some of you might already know but for those who don't, don't put your bear skulls to close to the wood stove, or close to any heat source.  I had four skulls on a mantle above my wood stove and just happened to take a close look at them today and all of them were cracked up pretty good, all of the skull's canines were split all the way down the middle length wise, a good size chunck of one canine fell off one skull.  Heat does a number to the skulls, all the skulls were eaten by beatles, never would have thought this would happen from heat,  lesson learned.

Thanks for posting.
I plan on getting a few skulls done this year. Good info to share.

Teeth are actually pretty sensitie when it comes to heat and cold.  That is why Taxidermists don't use the real teeth in opem mouth mounts.  Those that are usued are usually Hippo, Wild Boar, elaphant, etc.  Though most of the time a cast and replica of the teeth are used.

Teeth are not the only thing not to put next to heaters or windows.  Any mount will be affected.  Causing shrinking, splitting, and cracking.
