Backcountry hunts
« on: December 29, 2009, 08:01:27 AM »
Anyone out there have a good story to tell about a backcountry/remote hunt or high buck hunt they went on this past season.  Hunting in the remote areas wether on foot or with stock always makes for good adventure.  Let's hear some stories and see some pictures.

I hunted Region H in Wyoming for mule deer.  It was the most beautiful high country I had ever seen.  I saw over 40 bucks in two days.  I also saw bull moose, several bugling elk, and big horn sheep.  Took this buck the second morning after my buddy missed. (I have a thing about missing/animals getting away).  Saw two bucks that were a little bigger (175"ish) on the first day.  He is only 23" wide but has some character and decent tine length.  Great place to hunt.

3 preferance points should get you a region H tag.  The special tag extra 200 dollars with no points or one point has real good draw odds.

If you have three points, you are in the max pool.  I would not waste them on H.  Hold out for one of the premium hunts.

I drew H with 1 PP.  I will buy the special license this year and should draw as well.  My hunting partner just happens to live in Gillette, so, I am hunting the wilderness boys!  I would suggest applying for "G" if you don't have this luxury.

But its all good, free info.

Eastside, I went in on my own two feet.   If I remember correctly, we were only in 3.5 miles, but gained 5200 feet elevation!   I was literally crawling at times, thank god for the eberlestock pack with the rifle scabbard....free hands were a must!
