Sleeping hammock

I've got a back packers net style hammock that weighs in at less than a few ounces. It's smaller and much lighter than a bivey tent. I still use a bivey over my bag but I stay warmer and more comfortable than if sleeping on the ground on a mat. A mat that weighs more and takes up space in/on my pack.

I'm looking for another lightweight net hammock. Can't find one.

Anyone use a hammock in the back country? Anyone know where I can find a 'lightweight' net hammock?

I used this nylon one this summer, http://www.rei.com/product/754773, with the slap straps to attach it between trees.  Not too slippery, all things considered.  You sleep in it at an angle.  I used a rainfly from an old tent over the top.  Not too bad, very light, and fit into my pack easily.  I'm over 200lbs, and it was a lot better than sleeping on the ground.

Thanx Whacker.. Good info in that thread. When I back pack using hammock, I suspend my pack and boots in a tree. No mouse issue.

I'm surprised that no one is using a net style hammock. (other than the fact that I can't find one available). I love mine but I can't remember where I picked it up some 20 years ago!  I'd like to get a couple for my boys. The nylon hammocks might have to do though. And I suppose the nylon hammock might have more than one use too? I have a water proof bivey bag. Also a bivey tent with fly. But for fall scouting excursions I'm thinking the boys can do just as I with hammocks and just sleeping bags with a light pouncho for a fly. Total weight is much less than even a bivey tent when you take the sleep mat out of the equation. And it's still more comfortable!

I'm thinking that some Herring net, (unused), would work just fine.  Dunno where I can get any.

I found one at Sportsmans warehouse in the spring a few years ago.  I would guess that more places will stock them as the weather warms.  I like it for lounging but I can't sleep in it for more than a few hours.  I need to be on flat ground.

To the contrary. I stay warmer in a hammock suspended about 18" off the ground than I do with decent insulating pad. I'm also more comfortable. The ground is capable of robbing a lot of body heat.

I may have to give it a try. I am skeptical cause I freeze my butt off on a cot w/o a pad. I like the idea of mice not being able to crawl on my face during the high hunts....lol

I stay warmer in a net hammock than I do on a nylon cot without pad too, that's why I'm leary of a nylon hammock.

You can always put the pad inside the hammock

That's the whole idea of a net hammock. To reduce weight. If I wanted to carry/pack a sleeping pad, I might as well sleep on the ground.

There is a place off hwy 2 in Sulton or goldbar that sells hammocks made from fishing gear... $20 if i remember right.. I used hammock when back country hiking as well light and you don't have any rocks or sticks jabbing you in the middle of the night.
