Last day Blacktail. First deer ever...
« on: January 01, 2010, 11:02:16 AM »
So I got my first deer ever the last morning of 2009.  He is a pretty good buck for Whidbey Island.  I was absolutely thrilled.

Got him with my Bowtech at 15 yards broadside.  The arrow went right through the heart and he was down 20 yards away.  An awesome way to end the 00's.

The back two points were broken off and the close one in this shot looked like it would have been a nice point.

Bucklucky, I actually screwed up the cape pretty bad, so I am gonna have to go with just an antler mount.

My little guy loved it!  After I found it I went and got him and we tracked the blood trail again.  He was excited to tell me "more blood on this fern Dad."  Awesome.

Congrats on a great buck!  The first will always be remembered.  That little hunting buddy of yours looks like he is ready to get in on some action.  What a way to end the year.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Nice buck and way to get the little guy involved. I shot a mulie that died in like 30 yards from the shot, only after I was home did I realize that I didn't analyze the the shot / anatomy. My animal had blood gushing out of the entrance & I can only assume on what I hit. Great job & way to connect on the last day. Mike

Hey thanks for the notes guys!  Here is a little more to the story...

He was with a group of 8 deer, 3 does, 2 fawns/younger deer and 2 smaller 2-points.  I was getting up from my hide to head back home when I caught one of the does moving across a trail about 70 yards away.  Then they kept coming.  I know the area pretty good and guessed where they would have to leave and then went and sat on that trail.  Sure enough, about 20 minutes later the whole group headed my way.  This guy and one of the smaller 2-points trailed and none of the does busted me.  When the two bucks got out in front of me, about 15 yards away, they started knockin antlers a little.  That was enough of a distraction for me to draw.  once drawn they looked at me wondering what that was, meanwhile I was taking a deep breath and centering the pin.  Arrow away and a brown puff where the green pin was.  Instant "YES"!

Anyway, the more I think about it the better it gets.  What a fun sport we have.

Nice buck!  I've seen some nice ones on this island.  I got a really nice one near Coupeville on some private land.  Was it North end or South end of the island if you don't mind me asking?

Patton,

It was on the South end, also on private land.

I was most amazed at how quickly he died.  You hit 'em in the heart and it is over.
