.22-250 coyote bullets?
« on: December 30, 2009, 01:07:37 PM »
what is recommended for a bullet for coyotes in .22-250 that won't punch giant holes in them? i'm not too sure i'm gonna keep pelts but wouldn't mind having 1 or 2 tanned.
i've not put any time in with this caliber or any .22 caliber other than an LR for that matter, and the yotes i've shot have all been with deer rifles.
i am not a reloader so it'll have to be a factory load.
thanks.

if i hunting for a hide, i just use fmj or my fmj tracers makes you have to track them after you shoot them they still tend to run aways. or just use my regular bullets a 52hpbt and head shoot them lol but even with a fmj if you hit shoulder it will still punch  good size hole.

Give the 40gr NBT(v-max's splash, too soft) a shot, slow them to about 3900.  Also the Speer 52gr FB HP will make it in and stay.  My B in L is shooting the 22-250 Win White box with 45gr bullets and doing fine.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I'm useing 50 gr. V-max's, so far they've done well. A caliber size hole in and no exit and no tracking, not that I'd track a yote anyhow.

I've shot the 52 gr FB Hp Speer for about 15 years out of my 22-250 not the best bullet for SD or BC but a good bullet for controlled expansion. Just depends on whether you shoulder splash them.

I use 55 and larger, I tryed Vmax and inside of 150 yards it literally blew pieces of guy 20 feet behind the coyote. I like the Hornady soft points.

I used to use a lot of 40 grainers in the 22-250 and a lot of 52 grn BTHP Match bullets. Every now and again the 40's would splash but not always. I used V-max, Blitzkings, and B-tips. The best results were with the Blitzkings, the worst were with the B-tips.

The HP match bullets never did splash for me but did exit. The damage was not too bad most of the time. I used Speer, Sierra, and Hornady. All were very accurate and absolutely deadly on the dogs.

Keep in mind that a lot of your called in dogs will be frontal shots and non of these will exit with a center punch unless you hit way to low.

FYI my buddy bought a box of the Winchester White Box 45 grn Hollowpoints and he blew up the last dog he shot pretty badly. One kill doesn't exactly make a study but the exit hole was large.

I use the Winchester white box and not very often do the 45 gr go thru. Occasionally with a low front hit or a side hit a little for back but not a lot.

IMO, a vmax or Nosler BT in 40gr. is the ticket to minimal hide damage out of a 250.

Another recommendation here for the 40 grain BT/v-max bullets. In most cases, just a pin hole going in, good cavitation inside (animals usually fold on the spot), and no exit hole.

For factory, hornady's got a varmint express - molly coated, v-max. My 220 swift really likes them.

May the morning silence be broken with the wisp of vanes trailing blades to their mark.
