Got my buddy his first Steelhead (pic)
« on: January 02, 2010, 09:01:11 PM »
My hunting buddy James asked me to take him fishin to get his first steelhead. His fishing experience consisted of trolling for kings and silvers a couple times a year and humpy fishin. The initial plan was to hit a river on the O.P., but due to time constraints, we weren't able to. We decided to fish the green instead. Started out at Flaming Geyser. About an hour into the trip, I missed a fish, then James missed one too. Then, a few minutes later, he calls to me and says he thinks hes got a fish on. His rod was bent like less then half way. I told him that he probably had a trout or a log. As it gets close to shore, I get a glimpse of the fish, and much to my suprise it was a very nice steelhead. I ran into the river, tailed it, and got it up on the bank. All I have to say it wow. Its not very often that someone whos never fished rivers gets their first steelhead on their first trip, let alone on the green! Needless to say, we were stoked. Fished the rest of the day without a bite. The fish took a small pink and white jig. Hooked it barely in the tip of the nose. I'm thinking the fish didn't know it was hooked. Anyway, here is the pic, enjoy.

Steelhead on his first trip, better prepare him for reality.

Or tell him to quit now, and save himself a metric ton of $$.

Up until now he did get why I take fishing as seriously as I do hunting.  I told him steelheading is serious business, now he gets it.

Actually, I get a way better return for my fishing dollars then I do my hunting dollars.  Most because I've been fishing salmon/steelhead for 8 years now and have it pretty well dialed in.  What is it like 50 bucks for a lisence that lets you harvest year round all over the state.  No special permits to put in for and the gear is much less of an investment then hunting stuff. Of course I've only been hunting for 2 years now so maybe that will all change.

Naw, it aint that hopeless.

Lots to do with the gents you learn to fish from...........gonna listen the the Big 5 tackle shop "pro"?
You will get advice as valuable as the hourly wage he makes.

If a guy is lucky enough to learn from some 5%ers..........you will be waffle stompin in quick fashion.

wtf who does this guy think he is?

An envious man who caught NOTHING two days ago. For himself, or for his buddy. If he wanted to one up you, he shoulda slapped up a pic, besting that fish.

Not a burned out fish ( no belly crease, dark red/green color ).

Most have spawned by now, but if they did have them, they would be large fully developed eggs.  These were tiny, too small to even use for bait.

Is the taste of the bait worth the sting of the hook twice?
