Shrimp Mushroom Pics
« on: May 08, 2007, 08:27:16 PM »
Here are a few pics I took a couple falls back in the Capitol Forest. They are of the Russula xerampelina, also known as the Shrimp mushroom.

The website mushroomexpert.com mentions how "Field guides list Russula xerampelina as a good edible . . . but I have my doubts" and then goes on to say "Though I have not tried it, and though the shrimp smell evidently dissipates or even disappears on cooking, I can't bring myself to experiment."

I am here to tell you that it is delicious! I like to pick them while they are buttons and slice and saute them. Always look for a blush of pink along the stem to help identify this mushroom. And NEVER eat a mushroom unless you are Positive of what it is.

Edit for typo!

Well, I've seen alot of them, but sure have never eatin one.  You slice up the bell, or stem and then saute them in butter?
