I thought about this one time.  I shot a dink of a 2 point (back when it was legal) as I was headed back to school and wanted the taco meat.  He was at about 300 yards.  I start working my way over to it and I see another guy approaching.  He is humped up over my deer.  I walk up to it and he has put his tag on it, and says to me "better luck next time".  I turned and walked away.  If I'd have said one word I would have killed him.  I was infuriated.  I went back to Idabooners to take a breath.  I then went out and killed a way bigger buck, so I guess it all worked out in the end.

Reminds me of hunting for taco meat when I was in college just outside of Spokane. I ended up getting to the piece of state ground that my uncle recommended for a quick close to home hunt late because he gave chitty directions. I got there a little after day break stepped out of my truck and walked about fifty yards and saw MD doe right at the edge of the fog. watched her for about 20 min. then caught a little movement behind a bush to her right so I looked closer with my binos. It was a real nice non-typical MD buck bedded down so I dropped to one knee, rested my muzzle loader on the other and waited for him to stand up (about 70 yards away). It seemed like forever but he finally stood up broadside and I squeezed the trigger. Between of the smoke and fog I could not tell exactly what what happened But I knew I hit him pretty good a little high I thought. I started following the blood trail immediately to see what happened. At first I was finding very little blood but after a couple hundred yards he was dumping blood out both sides and I knew I was going to walk up on him any second - that's when I heard the shot 100 yards ahead. I walked out into the clearing where the buck lay dead and two guys cut me off half way. They piped off immediately claiming the buck, I showed them the blood trail and tried to explain that I shot the buck and they got volatile real quick and the way they were clenching their guns made me real uncomfortable so I decided it was not worth it and walked away and said take the ^%#$&^@%$^( )(*&(* (you get the drift). I don't think that I have ever been so pissed off in my life - that was nearly 7 years ago and I am getting nearly that pissed off just writing this. The buck would've went close to the 200" mark but I never got a really good look at him. Sorry to rant but   But still when I look back on this I know that if I would have pushed the situation things could have ended much worse than they did.

Hey bone, I'm gonna call u out on this one(sorry) so u shot 2 bucks in one season???? I know u still had your tag but in other various threads people tell others to stop huntin if they have one wounded or killed one for a friend or whatever, how come nobodys is makin a fuss of this? Lol man, bone you're like Jordan on this board, u get away with anything lol! I'm jk I woulda did the same, but I had to bring it up

Anyway a couple years ago I shot a buck on private land we hunt, a hunter from across the canyon saw me and we ran into him when we drove to go get the buck, he thought it was on his land(it wasn't and I proved it) so he's with his daughter who's maybe 10 and he's cussing me out and yelling and tryin to make me feel dumb, so after he's done makin himself look like an idiot I ask if he's done and I tell him have a nice day I have a buck to tend to, but I can without a doubt say that if his child wasn't there I woulda whooped his behind cuz I don't tolerate that, argueing is one thing, but gettin in someones face and all that? Naw I don't play that!

Yeah, Bone gets treated like a god around here but with his contributions he should stand out among the crowd.  But I don't know how you could possibly call him out on this issue when the person who "stole" his buck tagged it as his own.  Give the guy a break, man. :twocents:

Unfortunately in the end the anti's get more ammo against us, when the ultimate culprit was alcohol.

There is no shortage of morons on our public land..... and most of the time alcohol is a major contributing factor especially around big camps.

Are you supposed to wait and be the second person to pull the trigger when someone has a gun pointed at you? Last time I checked that doesn't work out to well.  Self Defense....I will pull the trigger first.

Self defense pure and simple.  I think the shooter showed extreme self control not to fire sooner.  Also trying to shoot the gun out of the guys hand (although dumb) showed his desire not to take a life.

Iv'e been trained to stop the threat, the threat is the weapon pointed at you.  There is no doubt in my mind that if someone points a gun at you they have the ability and desire to use it.

Iv'e had a firearm pointed at me twice in my life, one time the only reason I did not fire is because I did not have a clear shot (ie bystanders behind the threat)  The second time I realized before I engaged the threat, that the threat could not see me do to lighting conditions.  I was able to reposition to a location of cover and was able to end the threat without shots being fired. Thankfully both instances ended without loss of life.  Its one of the things you train hard to be good at, but hope you never have to use it for real.

what a sad situation. if its all accurate then I think the other party did what they had to do, but still :(

Can't fathom someone taking someone elses animal, I hear about it happening all the time and it makes me wonder, who are these people?  :dunno:

several years ago over in Pullman while hunting along the breaks I finished off a MD buck that came down the draw I was in. I could tell it had taken at least two rounds already and I'm not one for watchin' an animal suffer so I finished it off then walked over to take a look at it. Three guys came down the ridge to me as I was standing over the buck, they were all nervous looking and one stutters "we we shot it first, but but you can have it". completely caught me off guard. course I snapped back "its your *censored*in deer dude why would I want the damn thing, besides ya shot up all the good parts, I'd help ya pack it if it weren't opening day"  :chuckle:  sad to say thats the only muley I ever shot  :bash: hate those things, evil evil animals.  >:(
