Close call...sort of
« on: January 06, 2010, 05:56:12 PM »
I ran down to the Puyallup/Carbon for a couple hours today. Both rivers were very high but on the downside with to much color. When I first walked up I walked a crossed a sandy area obviously it had been under water recently but seemed firm enough. I fished with no luck for about an hour, then walked a crossed the same patch of sand I had walked before only this time instead of sinking an inch, I went straight to mid thigh on my left and just below my knee on my right leg. My waders were sucked in tight. I first started laughing, then realized I could be in trouble. It took me almost 15 minutes of slowly working my way out without loosing my wadres or sinking further. When I finally got out I was covered in sand. I washed off in the river and looked back to where I was stuck. I could not even tell the sand had been disturbed. That was kind of freaky. I had my phone with me so I was not "too" worried, (actually I was more worried about being found in that ridicules situation) but just goes to show how fast the unexpected can happen.

Glad to hear you came out ok.  I know of one lady that got stuck, in silt mud on Ship Creek in Anchorage, the tide got her before they'd (FD) could get her out..

Scary.

I had to wade out in quick water once to save a buddy. Sometimes bigger is better.... I blocked the push of the current and we waded together to safety.

when i used to fish the carbon river, i had that happen a couple times.  almost always on a steeper looking gravel bar after a high water.  fresh rocks on the surface, step on them and you go up to your knees(or worse).
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun
