Moose
« on: January 18, 2008, 09:14:49 PM »
I was going through some old pictures. I came across this one and the hair stood up on my neck again. I was going to school at WAZZU and was out for a little hike with my smokepole looking for a some elk that sometimes frequented this piece of property. I jumped momma moose and I though wow that is cool. Well not cool. She started stomping, grunting, growling and coming at me. A have never back peddled so fast with a gun pointed at a critter in my life. She finally stopped. I grabbed my camer and that is when I saw baby about 20 feet from where I was originally standing. Good thing I didn't end up in between em.

Man I miss that property. Elk, deer, moose, bear, turkey, pheasant, wolves, you name it I saw it on that 100 acre knob and wheat basin.

Yeah moose are kind of unpredictable. I spent allot of my summer's and winters up in AK at my grandparents house and have had Moose ignore me, be curiouse and come investigate and one year try to kill me! Had to do some evasive maneuvering and climb a tree until she calmed down. Beautiful animals though.

Nothing more dangerous in the woods than a cow moose with a calf, especially a young one.   Getting stomped by one of them would be a serious ass whoopin.  glad you nailed a picture.

The last thought on my mind was to try and get a picture at the time. But when she fianlly stoped and calmed down I knew I was safe. A little intense for a few seconds though.

jbd....I have a copy of that book and have read it.  I actually had the chance to hunt on that ranch once.  Shot the only moose that I saw..a 40" bull.  Missed a long shot at some wolfs.  One of the guys in our party got a wolf.   Good book if someone is looking for some winter readng.
It never changes, but it is always different.

forgot to mention...the hunting rights to part of that old several million acre ranch are for sale...150K.   Moose, caribou, grizzly, wolf.
