10 mm for hunting
« on: January 10, 2010, 09:44:29 PM »
So I've been looking for another handgun to add to my collection, preferably something I can hunt deer with.  10mm keeps popping up when I research hunting calibers, apparently its quite popular for deer sized game and smaller.  Smith and Wesson chambers it in a revolver and Kimber in a 1911.  Have any of you hunted with a 10 mm?  If so which gun and how did it perform?  Any other info would be great also.  Thanks

After researching and asking around I am of the opinion that the 1911 platform is ill suited to heavy use of the 10mm round as originally designed (200gr bullet @ 1,200+ fps).  The run of the mill factory stuff today is loaded well below the established SAAMI pressure level.

IMHO think it would be fine with at least 180gr bullets which have good sectional density for penetration.  The 10mm is just a .40 S&W with an extra 200-250fps. Your range limitation will be dictated by concerns over shot placement.  I personally would feel comfortable within 75 yards.

This is my Glock 20 SF with Lone Wolf 5" Tactical Match barrel.

Smith .44 double action. They offer a light weight if it were for safety, but I prefer the heavier models.

I know of a guy who uses a colt delta cup in 10mm.....dude is evil with it. he guides for brown bears and has stopped a charge with it and killed plenty of bou'. it is a pretty short range weapon, especailly with lead heavies in it, but no doubt it works in the right hands.

Check out Double Tap ammunition for some loadings that speak with authority.  They chrono their loads out of actual firearms and not just test barrels.  Their loads do not exceed SAAMI.

10mm 200gr Wide Flat Nose Gas Check Hardcast @ 1,300fps out of a Glock 20.  That's 750 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle.

I've had a few 10mm semi autos, a G20, G29, and currently a Dan Wesson CCBT.  These were all carry guns that would work for deer if the opportunity came up (not the G29 though, the barrel isn't long enough). I think that the 10mm is great for that role. I don't think I would buy one specifically for hunting though.

That said, the S&W model 610 would be a pretty nice gun to pack around if I were to buy a 10mm to hunt with.
