Pass Lake?
« on: January 25, 2008, 06:32:09 PM »
Any flyfisherman been out battling the cold on Pass Lake recently?   :fishin:  I was gonna go out last Monday, but didn't get to it.  I've never fished it, but I hear winter/spring is the time to catch big browns and bows out there.

pass lake is not a high mountain lake. it's a fly-only lake right before you get to deception pass. it is best fished in winter and is known for big fish, but it's hard to catch them. there is a  lot of downed trees in that lake making for lots of snags and the fish know it and will go for the trees when hooked.
fish the trees with big leeches or fish the open water with chironomids if you like incredibly boring, slow, and cold fishing. it works though.

Beware of the wind there. My friend who fishes it says if it is windy thats not the place to be on a float tube. He knocked them dead on Woolley Buggers

Ive had some very good days in the spring up there. Fish with chironomids close to the highway on the SE end of the lake, and in front of the house in the SW corner of the lake. black buggers wrok well too but in the colder water they are not moving too fast so a slow strip works best.

I've got a 9 ft pontoon boat with anchor and electric motor, so hopefully I'd be able to manage with at least a little wind on Pass Lake.  If time allows I'll have to give it a try.

I'm keeping my eye on the ice condition over on the Yakima.  That's usually my favorite place to go as soon as the river is clear of the major ice chunks.

Fished a section of the Yakima on Thorp Rd last January with a friend.  It was 19 degrees with snow all around, but boy was it pretty.  Didn't catch anything but saw several mule deer on surrounding hills and about 40 turkeys all sitting on the roost in a huge tree on some guys property as we left that afteroon.

Came back in March to ask for permission to hunt turkeys there come April, but all the turkeys had left.  The guy said it was the first time in 15 yrs or so that any turkeys had come onto his property.  Stayed there about 3 wks and then were gone.

Dang!
