«

February 12, 2010, 12:42:20 AM »
hi, i got myself a savage 110 in .270 win. i was wondering, how good is it foe coyotes, i'm in the tri-cities area. how long of shots am i looking at? were can i get cheap ammo, what weight of bullets to use? i know that this is alot of questions, but i'm pretty sure there's plenty of people that have some experience with this kind of stuff. thanks for any help

Well you wont be saving any hides. You should have no trouble nailing coyotes out to 300 yards maybe 400 with a good scope. Federal offers loads in 130-150gr. Most all ammo makers have stuff at their websites to help you decide.

If you want to try saving a hide, buy some of the federal premium stuff loaded with Barnes X bullets, should be your safest bet for saving a hide using a 270win. If you just wanna whack some Yotes probebly the best buy on factory ammo that shoots pretty well is the Federal Blue/silver box stuff.

For low priced ammo in my 270 I've always bought the Winchester Power Points at Wal Mart for $12/box. It's been a couple years though since I've bought any so I'm sure the price has probably gone up. They were always very accurate, almost as good as my handloads. For coyotes I'd go with the 130's to start with, although it really doesn't matter. You could try both 130's and 150's and see if one shoots better in your gun. Your 270 will be great for coyotes, just as long as you don't want to do anything with the hides.

I would find some 130's that it likes and shoot only them, then when it becomes deer season you will have the ballistics burned into your head. I know on the 270 that I hunt with most often, I can hold where the crosshairs fatten on 9x at 470yds and make good hits, money at 250yds and everything in between is from lots of practice.
you can't expect to shoot like that if you have 30 different loads.

My favorite factory .270win ammo is the Federal 130's in the blue/silver box. They seem to shoot well in my rifles. I reload the 140 Nosler Accubond and use that on everything, deer, elk, coyotes.

You will probably have to special order them, but I am pretty sure you can find 110 grain factory loads that would be ideal for coyotes. The only downfall (besides cost and actually finding them) is that you will have to resight your rifle in this summer to deer/elk hunt with it when you start shooting 130 or 150 grain loads.
For my money, I'd just buy a few boxes of 130 grain bullets, get your gun dialed in and go have some fun. You said you didn't really care about the hides anyway.
