mosin nagant question.
« on: February 12, 2010, 10:17:24 AM »
i have a mosin nagant 91/30,  everytime i shoot it the spend cartridge gets jammed inside the chamber and it won't eject. i end up having to drop the cleaning rod down the muzzle to unjam it.  the headspace is good,  the thing that boggles my mind is that if i don't fire the gun, the cartrige ejcects fine(unfired)  but once i fire it, it gets jammed.  does the brass expand when fired?  i use mostly surplus ammo,  but i used store-bought ammo and had the same problem,  anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

Maybe the ejector on the end of the bolt is wore. The cases do expand once fired and add considerable friction. Try a close look at it and see if thats the problem.

how would i know if the ejector on the bold head is worn?   the cartridge gets jammed pretty hard in there,.  i have to litterally ram it out with the cleaning rod

Have you taken one of the stuck cases and measured it after getting it out?
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

Do you have to pull really hard for the bolt to pull off the rim of the cartridge or can't you get the bolt open at all befor you get he cleaning rod in there to get the cartridge case out?

Alot of cheap Russian ammo is in Lacquer coverred steel.  It could be a build up of Lacquer in the chamber or a very rough chamber.  I'd take a look at the chamber and give it a very good cleaning.   If that doesn't do it take it to a gunsmith and see what's wrong.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

This is a pretty common problem on Mosins, it's most likely built up cosmoline in the chamber.  You would be surprised how tough it is to actually get all of it out.  Try heat (don't burn up your gun though)
