Your favorite camping recipe
« on: February 12, 2010, 07:19:44 PM »
OK folks, cough it up. What is your favorite dish you make while camping?

Here is mine"

Dice up some potatoes and fry them in a pan with butter or bacon grease.
Cook the spuds all the way.
Then add two or three Johnsonville brats.
Take them out of the skins and mash them up and cook them all the way (next to or with the spuds).
Then add eggs to it all.
Then cook till eggs are done. Won't take long at this point.

Season with salt and pepper. Very good!

One of my all time Faves was the giant T-Bone grilled over the fire and eaten bare handed.

In a hurry? Great for backpack trips, especially when you have just set up in the rain, cold, snow...need hot calories fast?

I put 20-22 oz of water on to boil, throw in two (or one) packets of chicken or tuna (the foil packets pack better, canned is OK for car camps) or dice up some hard salami. Throw it in and let it boil a few minutes with whatever seasoning you like. Lemon Pepper, Garlic salt..sometime I just go heavy on the pepper, lite on the salt. Then pour in a packet of Idahoan instant mashed potatoes, all are prespiced. Stir in, take off heat, stir till it thickens. Top with Bacos, Parmesan cheese, seeds, nuts whatever. It'll heat you up enough to dry yer clothes from the inside...

Shoot three Roughed Grouse while on the way back from a day of scouting Deer before opening weekend.

Field dress the Grouse within minutes of kill. (cut the head off at the base of the neck, flip'm on their back, spread the wings and stand on the wings close to the body. Pull on the feet until you've got breasts, thy's and legs in your hand. Bird shall be skinned and gutted at this point.) Stuff in a ziploc and keep 'warm' on the hike back to camp.

Debone the bird. Cut all meat into dime and nickel sized chunks and lightly brown in red wine and butter adding a little salt/pepper to taste.

Mix and cook a box of  Fetucini Alfredo (we buy the Safeway brand).

Drain the meat off and mix the meat with the pasta as the Alfredo sauce cooks down.

Serve four full plates of this with an ice cold Beer of choice, or this also goes well with a little JD and Coke, and some Garlic bread pulled fresh from the oven.

There is a huge difference between 'fresh killed/cooked' birds and those that get refridgerated/frozen first. You could do this with any upland game bird. For Quail, I'd probably switch to a c*censored*ay.

Our favorite foods always turn out to be the breakfasts. Best memories, wake early before the rest of my family, cook outside over my stove, stow foods in my oven as necessary and serve all hot around the renewed fire.... awesome memories...

 :yeah:

Another unforgettable meal.   Arctic Grayling.  Caught in a little pool in Springcreek. South side of the Brooks, 2 drainages West of Arctic Village.  Cut the dorsal fin off, mostly. No easy task, like cutting Rebar.
Cut into sections about 3in long. Put the pot on with about 1.5in of water and 2 golf ball size chunks of clarified butter, maybe more. A tablespoon+ of Lowery's lemon pepper. Put the fish in on end. Crank up the heat once it came to a boil let it go for 3-5minutes. Or two-three 360's with the binos looking for uninvited company :chuckle:

Best fish I ever had.  Wish I had taken note on exactly how long I cooked it.

Axle that looks good. We do about the same.   It's called Ugly eggs. Diced ham, diced potatos, onions, mushrooms, peppers....scramble in some eggs and throw in a big handfull of chedder cheese. Top with salsa and a side of bacon. Man I always look forward to Ugly eggs.

And coffee that's been on the woodstove to long.....gotta love it.

That reminds me.  I use to cook halibut in camp.  Take halibut fillets, a little squeeze of lemon, salt, lemon pepper, onions and smear mayonnaise all over the top, wrap up tight and cook over coals until flaky.

I want to go camping with you all!

Tin foil, slice up taters, onions and mushrooms.  Lay two strips of bacon toss on some taters onions, mushrooms also can add zuccini if you like.  Put on some johnny's and then lay two strips of bacon on top.  Cook both sides in the fire for about 8-10 min.  Open up after cooking second side and pile on some shredded cheese let melt.

We call them spudloafs.

Tasty!

Great recipes! Better than any restaurant!!!

Here's am oldie my Dad taught me in 1974 when we went to Canada and caught walleyes and made shore lunches. Love walleye dipped in corn meal and fried with fried onions and potatoes.
Remeber fishing trips in Ontario and Manitoba when my brothers and I getting up in the morning and coming out of the tent and my Dad frying Bannock bread. Will never forget the smell as long as I live

Very simple but gooooood
Bannock bread:

Bannock
1 cup white flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
2 teaspoons baking powder (always use good baking powder)
1/2 teaspoon salt

Mix ingredients in a zip lock before camping. When ready to make add water , a little oil or melted butter,  form a stiff dough. Make patties and fry in butter, bacon grease, oil. Serve with fruit jam

You can't beat eggs, potatoes, and fatty meat recipe when camping Axle. That is a staple of mine
The only time I buy spam, or hash or canned bacon is when i go camping.
Wife is "spam junkie" when camping.

And she was a vegetarian when I first met her. "The power of pork" I guess
