Okanogan Deer?

Looks like I'm going to have some private land access up around Okanogan this year. I've heard good things about Omak for Mulies, is Okanogan a "big deer" area? Is it more Mulies than Whitetails, or both? Should I probably plan on hitting this hard this year for a trophy buck? Please share what you know about the Okanogan area. I know little to nothing. Thanks!

Hunted up there during the general season opening weekend one year (2003, I think(?)), didn't do any good.  But then again, I was kind of hunting blind.  If this site has taught me one thing, it's to do research.  Good luck man.  Sorry I don't have anything useful to add, but I wanted to watch the thread..

There are a lot of monster mulies killed in that area every year. I would definately check it out if I were you! Private land access is a huge advantage in the area cause there are lots of people after those giants. I havent hunted the area much for deer but while bear hunting saw a lot of nice bucks, including a 30 incher that had to be pushing 200". Almost had to break my trigger finger off not to shoot.

Well, I'll head up that way, and start getting to know the ground I'll be hunting. Maybe I'll find some sheds that will give me an indication of what awaits. Do you know if there are coyotes, or rock chucks in good numbers up there?

Decent amount of coyotes if you know where to look, don't know about rock chucks.

Man, sure are alot of people on this site who seem to know every deer in the state personally! I wish I could know as much as you guys! I simply told my experience with the area but I guess I should have asked you guys what it was I saw first. I'll try not to be so "exuberant" next time.

Got any pics of these monsters?  Haven't seen many pics on this site of monster muleys from Okanogan.  By the way, I didn't see anywhere on here of anyone claiming to know all the deer in the state personally....

Just wondering how I was being "over the top" by stating what I know about the area...are there not big bucks killed in that area every year? did I not see a 200" buck? I wasn't aware of any monster bucks killed in Okanogan in recent years.  If 130-150" is a monster, then I guess so.  And they're few and far between.

I could give a rats arse about stars.  If a mod can swap my stars to you, there all yours.

It really depends on where in relation to the town of Okanogan the land is.  It will also depend on what time of year.  There are nice bucks in the area, but weather and location play a big part in it.  If your down in the valleys in Early Archery or General Modern without weather to push the bigger bucks down, not so great.  If you catch the weather or hunting late season you have a shot and a nice buck.  While I would not compare buck quality area's of Wyoming and Montana, there are respectible bucks in the area representative of the quality in Washington State.

Also depending on the area, there are both Muley and Whitetail with mixes of both in numerous area's around the town of Okanogan/Omak.

All said and done it's nice country with diverse habitat depending where you are.
