Cooke Canyon Today

Three of us plus my son and his friend all went to Cooke Canyon today. We had two pointers Hermie the Vizsla, Pen the E Setter and then a flushing Lab named Buddy. First time any of us hunted mixing pointers and a flusher. Have to say it work really well. When the pointers had locked on the bird the flusher would go bust out the bird. Did not seem to Faze the Pointers at all.

I think Cooke is only open to hunting another month and a half before they close for training only untill this summer. So make you reservations now.

Here is a pic of the two pointers locked one. Sorry this is the best pic we got of them pointing together and this pic does not do it justice as it was really cool, then just a few seconds later Buddy was sent in to flush.

The wife was a little disappointed that she stayed in the truck but said next time she will join us, even if it is to only take pictures.

And Dave, if you ever want to work the dogs together, just let me know. I can work on larry for some birds  hey Larry.........

I already have eggs in the incubator.  Should have plenty of birds when the bird dog training season reopens in Aug.

sounds like you had fun,  I could be wrong but in my opinion I wouldn't suggest doing a lot of hunting with flushers with your pointer it can be fine at first but they just might think hey why should I stand this bird when that dog can run on in there and bust it and we still pop it.  I don't know just a suggestion.

I have seen a few shows that use pointers and flushers.
The pointers do there job and the flushers do there's.

Seems to work for them

I have talked to some trainers and they told me not to run my pointer with our lab because it will wamt to make her break point and go after the bird so that the other dogs wont get it.  They said that if your still training the dog to not do it and work on training the dog to work with flushers later on once they get a few seasons under their belt

I am thinking the same thing. I am guessing it all comes down to training! I have a pointer and my hunting partner has two flushers. My pointer runs farther than his labs but I can not keep up with one of his labs. I don't think that is a good match because my pointer stays in front of that flusher. The other one does not leave my/his side until she catches scent so I think that could work. So far we have only hunted grouse together. So???
