Halibut
« on: February 27, 2010, 09:26:32 PM »
Fellas,

I just getting my new boat set up, and other than salmon I would like to do a little (some) halibut fishing, but dont see me out in ocean.  How far would I have to travel to catch some decent sized ones.  Living in Puyallup and can travel.

I can show you some spots in the Eastern Straight if you want :dunno:. It's not as good as the ocean, but there's still a few fish. Most spots are a ways off shore, for the most part, so it's big water, even though it's inside. I know a few spots close by, but the closer you get to the beach the fewer fish you'll find.

I'm hoping to try for some slabs this year as well on the inside.  I've heard Partridge Bank and Smith Island do well.  Anyone interested in tagging along, especially with experience, drop me a line (so to speak  :) ).  Gotta get the turkeys early to focus on halibut.

What did you pick up for a kicker on that Crunchy?

Lokidog,
Looks like it'll be an 8hp Honda powerthrust for the kicker.  I dont have it home yet, but hopefully in the next fews days. What size of slabs have you heard in the Partridge Bank area?

I'm not real tuned in to what gets caught, but I think I heard of a 60 or a little bigger last year.

Please provide pics and stories when you all go out.  I have always wanted to learn how to fish out there in the salt, but I am a chicken little and a bit afraid to take my 14 foot out on the big water.

Don't forget to give me a ring when you head out there Steve !!  :P

Lokidog, I wouldn't mind showing you a thing or 50 about halibut, I have fished around the Port Angeles, Sequim area for years and have had pretty good luck !! sold my boat a couple years ago for a 5ver but still know where to go !!

Steve is right, the closer to the beach you get the slower the bite is but there are fish to be had if you just use the right stuff !!!  ;)

If you're thinking about buying a bunch of Halibut gear, you might hold off for now. The last couple years have been OUTSTANDING for Halibut and the sporties went way over their catch quota. This years season has been cut way back, down to something like 6 days in the Straights.

I wouldn't expect the next couple seasons to be any longer either.
