Primos E-Caller
«
on:
February 03, 2008, 05:56:49 PM »
I am a novice predator hunter, I've always used mouth calls but wouldn't mind trying an electronic but don't want to spend a ton of money.
My question, do the cheap calls like the Primos E-caller work or is it just a complete waste of money?

+1 on the Johnny Stewart for a cheap call that works. Otherwise, spend the big bucks for a FP, Minaska, or WT.

not to go off of what any of these guys are saying...that and i have a Bearmanric call and its awesome...but if you want to try an electronic call, make your own...lowedog on here had a website with a DIY and a list of free downloads of how you could turn a 20 dollar power horn, a simple headphones amplifier(10bucks) and a mp3(which most people have) into a caller(just dont mix brittany spearse, hit me one more time with a cottontail rabbit distress squeel. while you may think they sound the same. coyotes will think differently, lol
).....i have downloaded all the sounds and use those to practice with my one custom call. but when i get a chance ill make the cheep version....he uses it, painted it some and it works...i figure i can use the cheep version untill i can save up and buy a setup like what bofire has....one of those wireless, calls. freaking sweet.
The website is
www.varmintal.com
and it is completely devoted to shooting better, knowing your firearm better and killing coyotes and how to do that....
but then again just an option. if anything get a couple hand calls download a scream or distress and practice. thats what everyone here has told me................

I will second what CoasthunterJay said. We made one of those calls last year and just download from varmintal's website. Works great and cost us about $50 total.

If you are looking for a cheapo... the varmint al type is good. It will help you decide if you want to pursue calling (and a better caller) in the future. I made one and it works fine.

Anyone make a home built with a good remote? I would like to be able to set it out at least 100 yds away and control it. I had a cass creek used it once and chucked it in the trash.

The least expensive caller I've call in critters with, and it works quite well. I still keep it in the truck to listen to books on tape and play Calling CD's to practice against. It's an old battery powered computer speaker with built-in amp $5.00 at the Goodwill store. Both the Cassette and CD player were abandonned because the earphones died.

You can build a remote useing a Nady or Azden camcorder remote sound system. Here is a picture of a JS Preymaster made remote with an Azden unit. It works with the CD player/ computer speaker I posted above also. It would work with the home made units others have posted and you can eliminate the RadioShack amp as the Azden built in amp has plenty of volume. Azden remotes run $150 Nady's under $100.

I'm not sure what the max range is. I ran it about 30-40 yds, just far enough to take a coyotes attention from me. It is a line of sight rig also, it will not work if you try to push the signal through dirt.
