09 Eastern WA Muley
« on: March 02, 2010, 03:10:37 PM »
I decided to give bow hunting a shot this year and although I saw lots of deer and even got a couple of shots off, I didn't connect on any of them. This year was my friends 2nd season deer hunting and since my season was already over, I was more than willing to go out hunting with him and give him a hand. We decided to go to an area by where I was bow hunting since I had seen lots of deer and actually shot a pretty nice buck there with my rifle last year. Also, my friend was only going to be able to hunt opening day this year so we wanted to try and get an early crack at something.

Opening day rolled around and we got to our spot and got all situated at about 6:20. We were sitting there glassing and waiting for things to lighten up for about 15 minutes when I spotted 3 deer a pretty good distance away. One of the deer was quite a bit bigger than the other 2 so we decided to get a closer look to see if it was a buck. We were able to get about 250 yards away from the deer and I put my binos up on the biggest deer and sure enough it was a buck and it was pretty big. Since it was only my buddy's 2nd year hunting I didn't want to tell him how big the deer was and have him get all nervous and miss. So to avoid any of that happening I simply told him to shoot the top one. I was reaching for my rangefinder when I heard a BOOM follwed quickly by a THWACK! I saw the buck try to run over the ridge and right as he crested it I saw what looked like a stumble and then he was out of sight. We grabbed out things and headed over to where we last saw this buck and sure enough he was laying there dead right where we last saw him. Once we saw him I'm pretty sure people 3 canyons over could've heard us hootin, hollerin, and giving each other high fives! This buck turned out to be a 4x3 with a 22 1/4" spread. The buck was quartering away and my friend put a perfect shot on him right through the vitals. The buck only ran about 40 yards.

I couldn't be any happier for my friend so bagging this buck, but at the same time I'm pretty jealous. This is only his second buck and now he has shot a bigger whitetail AND a bigger muley than me! Oh and like I said earlier, we wanted to get an early crack at one this year, right after he shot I checked the time and it was 6:46. Shooting light that day opened at 6:45.

That is the kind of thing that gets a guy hooked on the outdoors. I do not expect folks to take everyone to their special places as we have seen TOO many times on this board it is abused and friendships are ruined. But to take a Friend out and help to a buck like that is just awesome. I normally take my hunting friends to our property, but this year it will be for my kids (ages 8 and 11 by fall) and if all goes well my nephew. Older Bro is in the military and they should be stationed at Fort McChord-Lewis or whatever they now call it and I can not wait. Nephew will be 16 and his first time out. I have not hunted with any of my family as an adult so this will be great even if no rounds are fired. Great first post and welcome :hello:

Great first post man!  That is a fine example of a Washington muley

Thanks everybody, I'm very glad that I found this website! I've found myself spending a lot of time here and it's awesome! The ground we we're on belongs to a friend of ours and his family runs cattle on it. He isn't a big fan of hunting in the canyons so my friend and I have taken advantage of it. We both killed our bucks on the same ridge, so you know where we will be waiting next year!
