Rei quarter dome is pretty good for the money and to save weight you can just use the footprint and shell

Take a look at the Eureka Pinnacle Pass. Cabelas has it on sale for $129. I have the same tent but slightly smaller, mine is the 2 man version. It's sure nice to have a little extra space so you can keep your rifle, pack, boots, etc. inside the tent with you while you sleep. And you can get dressed in it if you have to.

That Pinacle Pass is 6 bloody pounds.. Nope.. Not for me.
And that certainly doesn't qualify as a Bivy Tent. More like an Alpine Condo!

I have one of the outdoor research's gortex bivy. I love it. I have slept in -25 below temp in Montana, pouring down rain on mountain tops. I often take it on my 100 mile crest trail hikes too. I found the best deal on it thru Campmor. Give it a try you will love it.

I have one very similar to the Eureka Solitaire. Can't go much wrong with less than 3 pound to get you out of the weather.

More examples of 1 person tents or Bivy's at Campmor dot com... Shop by Sale, Hot Deals, Tents, 1 person.
There are other sources out there. Don't just go by what REI has in stock.

One of my tents is the REI Quarter Dome Ultra Light. About 3.5lbs with poles and ten stakes. 4-tent 2-doors 4-guy outs. You can always add Para-cord to the loops and tie it to BFR's etc... About 4-5 inches on either side if you lay in the middle, two doors, a lot of mesh, very airy. Under 200$ if I remember right.

Thanks for all the feedback guys...lots to consider.
And no worries, I never shop at REI, too damned expensive half the time.
I appreciate the feedback, will let you know what I come up with!

One nice feature about the blue tarp method that knowone has pointed out is that if you kill a buck you can burn the tarp and string to free up space and eliminate weight in your pack. less weight and more space is good.

BLRman... So, you're willing to start an intensly hot plastics fire on dry east side to rid yourself of a pound and a half? Not to mention the polution of the plastic you'll be leaving in the ground in a wildlife area?
As hunters, we must also be good stuards. (Please think about that)
If I need to drop weight, the tarp could be used to wrap up gear you don't need for the return trip, that could be recovered the next day or so.

I have made gromet tie outs on regular plastic to make my own tarps. just make a sandwich with duct tape as the bread and the plastic as the meat......bring in the $4.00 grommet kit and viola.....instant tarp that is light and shaped to your needs
