A little help needed. What camera to choose and why?
« on: March 21, 2010, 05:37:06 PM »
So I am thinking about upgrading and I have a few in mind but am not fully sure the differences and advantages of one over the other. Any help is good.

What is the real difference between the Nikon D5000 and the D90?
D5000
12 mp
HD video

D90
12 mp
HD video

And why would the D90 be better (more expensive) than the Canon Rebel?

Canon EOS Rebel Tli
15 mp
1080p HD video

I think the T1i shoots the 1080p in just a small format or just a few frames per second or something like that, there was a real reason I didn't want that one, I looked at the T2i and they fixed all those problems and it's actually a nice camera with a really nice video feature !!

Ultimately I went with the 50D with no video since I am not interested in learning about editing still photos and video at the same time, I'll just take it one thing at a time !!!

You should consider Canon first as there are more of us that shoot Canon on here and could help out more besides equipment could be obtained more easily !!  Just sayin !!!  ;)

Nothing against Nikon or Sony !!!

The D5000 is the entry level unit with a trim feature set. Limit on lenses. Unknown sensor.
The D90 has better high ISO performance, good viewfinder and much better sceen resolution. Also has a Sony sensor.
Nikon lenses can be a bit more expensive. It has been rumored that the D90 will be replaced end of this year but won't diminish it being a good camera.

You can't loose either way really, I do prefer Canon myself and like Robo said, borrowing lenses or getting help is a little easier since there are so many more of us posting. :twocents:

From the reviews I read, the new Canon Rebel is a great camera for the price.  If you are going to take landscapes and macro the live view that you get with the 50D sure is nice.  I haven't found much to like with the Nikon D series or the D5000, when playing around with friends cameras.  I do like the D300 a lot, but it the end, lens selection, and finding a great deal on used equipment,  won out for me, so I went with Canon
