Which choke???
« on: March 31, 2010, 08:03:35 PM »
Got a new to me Baikal 16 gauge O/U today with a case of #6 shot today. I was looking at the 4 chokes with it and it has a full, M, and 2 IC's. My son will be toting it around this weekend and i think i am going to put the full in the top barrel and the Mod in the bottom barrel.

Looking for suggestions. I am going to buy the turkey choke made for this gun on gun broker but it will not be here for the youth hunt.

Shoot the full choke only. Or atleast shoot the barrel with the full choke first, then shoot the mod if a second shot was necesary. The mod probably won't pattern very tight though.

I think you should pattern the gun 1st to make sure it will kill a turkey.
270shooter is right though...the full will likely be the one to shoot 1st.

Do you have a selector switch?  IF so..Top Full bottom Mod.  or buy another full.  You can get extra full.. But I would pattern gun like was previously mentioned.
Wild Turkey, Walleyes, Whitetails and Wapiti..These are a few of my favorite things!!

Gonna pattern it tonight, i have to use what i have and it has a single trigger and the trigger is the selector, It defaults to the bottom barrel but if you push the trigger forward it selects the top barrel. I have the mod in the bottom. I have only found the chokes for the baikal on gunbroker i will look at sportsmans tonight. Thanks for the advice. It was what i was thinking but i didn't really know.

just a random thought here...I could not find Charles Daly chokes anywhere so I called Carlson's chokes and found out that the Daly's use the same threads/size as a Remington. You might give them a call and ask...you may find the same type thing.

I would not use a Mod. in a 16 ga for turkey. Go full and full. And second shot on a turkey is a little toff for a kid. Head shots only, all others wound birds. ;)

so I did a little digging. Those Baikals were sold by remington and are the same thing as a Spartan and also it looks like the chokes are interchangeable with a savage 411 shotgun. They're not interchangeable with Remingtons. They use the Tru-Choke chokes. They're available from www.colonialarms.com and also at carlsons www.choketube.com and some other places.

Thanks jackelope, i am going to order the turkey choke in extra full. Hope to have it by the opener. Cody is going to have to use the full in the top barrel and mod in the lower. Hope he doesn't need the mod. Looks like colonial is where i have to buy it from. Carlson doesn't have 16 gauge.

If the birds is within 25 yards their is practically NO difference between a full and a modified choke..providing your choke tubes are true. At 40 yards, a Full puts 70% shot in a 30 circle, Mod 60%...not to much difference, but enough that you probably should shoot the full. The general rule is to shoot your most open choke first, save your full for the longer shot. Under 20 yards you might want to think about shooting the Mod choke cause the Full is only going to be about 6-8 inch diameter pattern.  The main thing you don't want to do is worry so much about which barrel to use while the bird runs off. :twocents:
