Honestly if you're wanting to learn as you go, skip the opener and take a couple of days off during the week in late April and head out. There won't be a hunter behind every tree and the birds should be very huntable still. The opener can be frustrating for even the most experienced turkey hunters let alone rookies.
We found someone with about 40 acres with turkeys on them, and the price is reasonable. Is 40 acres enough land?
Just go do it! There will not be a better time, get out there and give it a try. Take the advice about no hunters a little later into the season and go see what you can do. The first time you get a gobble back you will know why the rest of us do it and your son will think it is really cool. Good luck.
