7mm STW opinions
« on: February 14, 2008, 12:31:56 PM »
Still trying to fiqure out which caliber to build a gun off of, for an all around Deer, Elk, and Black Bear gun.  Does anyone know the balllistics with a 7mm STW with 140TSX's, is the STW that much fast then the 7mm mag?  I was leaning towards the 257 weatherby, but the bullet weight is just to light.  Any opinions out there?

I have a STW and a 7mm RM.  The STW surpasses the RM in my guns by around 2-300fps.  I am not overly impressed with the 257 WBY ballistics, but it is faster then a 25-06.  If it was a deer rifle only then I would opt for the 257STW over the WBY.  The 257 will work for elk, but I think it is getting towards the lighter side.  I think the STW is a great round, and you just have to decide if it gives you enough extra.  I don't think you can specify a specific bullet, but use general true chronographed FPS to come up with a range.  My STW wide open will push a 120@3500 and a 160@3300.

Are you set on a the 7mm cal?  If so the STW is a screamer.  It would certainly be a fine choice for the game you listed.  A 300 RUM would be a good choice too if you're really wanting a fast shooter.  It's really hard to go wrong w/ a 7 RM, 7 STW, 300 RM, 300 WSM, 300 RUM.  Much of it boils down to personal preference.  The reality of the matter is that the vast majority of game is going to be shot at ranges under 300 yards and all those cartridges will perform just fine with good bullets.  The critter dies all the same.  Pick the one that tickles your fancy.

If you reload and are interested in a .284 don't over look the .280 Ackley, especially if you are willing to "build a gun".
