Legal to hunt with a bow during muzzy season?
« on: April 24, 2010, 12:09:46 PM »
Anybody know if you have a valid muzzy tag can you hunt with a bow rather than a muzzy during that season? It would seem like you could seeing it is an inferior weapon from a range standpoint.

Thanks

no... you cannot do it.  You can use archery equipment in modern firearm or archery.  Must use Muzzy for muzzy season.

Look along the side of the season pages for "Hunting Method" and it will tell you what you can use for each season !!  ;)

Yeah I saw that but it would seem you could use a lesser weapon like you can during Modern. Thanks for the replies

I agree with you fishm@n! Like everything else WDFW has to do with, it doesn't make any sense.

Asked a warden this question, big fat "no".  Of course, half the time even the wardens don;t know the answer....  :bash:

Hunting Method:
Muzzleloader only. Muzzleloader
tag holders can only hunt during
muzzleloader seasons and must
hunt with muzzleloader equipment.
Muzzleloading equipment must meet
regulations on page 70.

Like others said, you can not.  They do it to protect the muzzleloaders from archery hunters buying muzzleloader tags.  They have some really attractive opportunities but you have to use a smokepole.

i wish we had a late archery hunt here i would bow hunt for deer, but since we don't i muzzle load and like that. but with a 180 deer tag now i get to do all three and will spend about 50% of the time with smoke pole and 50% of the time with stick and string.

I'm sure most of you know why I ask, muzzy season is generally much more favorable from a weather standpoint (cooler than early-mid Sept) and many times bulls are still actively rutting or responding to calls.  I just don't want to plunk down hundred$ on an ML and all the gear and become proficient with it since I already am with a bow.

They don't protect Modern in the same way.. I guess that is a tiny part of the reason it is such a zoo during Modern.

I don't know... I don't recall ever seeing anybody hunting with a bow during modern firearm season.

Bobcat, Weathergirl got her buck with the bow during modern rifle.... more of a challenge and firearm restricted area.

Yeah, I wasn't saying people don't do it, just that it's not the reason modern firearm season is a "zoo" as the post above mine stated.

I do it all the time because I want the modern late tags versus the crap stuff archery gets, but would rather hunt with a bow.   I love th elooks I get when I haul a monster off the hill by all the modern guys.  Even have been turned in a couple times.
