250 Savage or 257 Bob?
« on: February 26, 2008, 11:47:42 PM »
hey people,
was coming home from a family function in Montana and while travelling stopped in at Lilja precision rifle barrel shop in Plains MT. and they were nice enough to give me a tour and show me what goes into their barrels and before I left I bought a barrel blank in .257" for my model 600 Remington. great folks at Lilja by the way, nice, friendly, hunters as well as target shooters. I was originally gonna go 250 for nostalgic reasons along with nonexistant recoil but now I'm not so sure. 257 Roberts is also known for low recoil too, right? what would you do? I'm putting it together for my kids now 12 & 8 to grow into, my girl is still only 68 pounds at 12 and probably won't get much bigger than her 4'-11" mom.

I  love my .250 but I would go with the .257.  Rounds for the .250 are really tough to come by and are pretty spendy when you do find them.  That is, unless you reload.  Both are great rounds.

thanks for all the advice and tips. I dropped the 600 and the Barrel off at the gunsmith today and I decided to go with my gut and am gonna have it chambered for the 250 Savage since they are getting harder to come by and you can still buy 257 Bobs new. I do handload and will have dies, brass, powders by the time it's ready and since I already have a 25-06 and my daughter has a 25-35 we have a selection of 25 cal bullets around. I can and probably will just buy a roberts this summer.

yeah if you reload you can load up some good rounds. if it was gonna be factory ammo i would have gone 257.

but sence you are reloading might as well be different and go with the 250.

thats what i would have done too.

I love shooting my 257. I only hunted with it one year because my grandpa hand built the stock on it. It would kill me if I damaged the stock.

I HUNT WITH A MODEL  600 IN 350. REM. MAG . I DID NOT KNOW YOU COULD PUT OTHER CALIBERS ON THIS MODEL. I AM AWARE THEY ALSO CHAMBERED A 6.5 MAG.

Yep, I almost went with a 6.5-284 since it intrigues me and as I told a friend it is everything the 6.5 mag was supposed to be. but in the end I thought since this is for my kids and not me I'd better stick to the original plan.

I can kinda agree with that, but when I did find 250 ammo it was less than 257's, not as many choice though. But since I am gonna be handloading and will buy at least 100 brass I should never be hurting for ammo, unless I leave it on the kitchen counter when I'm on my way out the door!

Nope, I told 'em to leave it & the sights off and to finish the barrel at 24".
