Blacktail calls
« on: June 10, 2010, 08:55:39 AM »
I have never used game calls for deer, usually just a spot and stalk guy.  But with me getting into treestand hunting, I am going to try using a grunt call and or a doe bleat.  I looked at cabelas, and all I seem to see is whitetail calls.  Which calls do you recommend for black tail??

Several years ago I had one of those square plastic "bite and blow" calls with the rubber band, I saw a deer about 200 yards away from me and gave it a try...
He came straight to me, I have tried it since with no luck, I guess every situation/deer is different.
At least it hasn' it scared them away... :twocents:

There is so many calls out there it seems overwhelming to a beginner in the field.  When you used that call was it often or just once in a blue moon?

If you are hunting around the rut, you can be quite successful rattling for blacktails.

bi mart?  I have seen them on cabelas, but would prefer to hold them and try them out before I bought something from online like that.  Have you ever used them at all?

Jones Calls  (now Point Blank)

http://pointblankcalls.com/Deer-Calls_c10.htm

The fawn bawl call can also be produced on the deer grunt call (it's adjustable with an o-ring).  One tip - with any vibrating reed grunt call, flip the call around and suck air through it vs blowing.  In cold weather your breathe will condensate and cause the reed to stick.

Yeah I know about the reed.  My favorite yote call is bad for that in the winter months, and it sounds like a duck with diaherra when it sticks.  I would have never thought to suck the air out of it.  Thanks for the website.

I usually use them when I can see the deer, but are too far away to get a shot, the rest of the time I am "Elk Hunting" and using an elk call, or just being quiet.....
Deer are usually something I shoot while trying to get an elk...
