Mountain Duck Hunting?
« on: June 20, 2010, 09:10:23 PM »
Has anyone tried duck hunting in the mountains?  I see videos on line of duck hunting beaver ponds and such in the mountains, and think that would be awesome, but have never heard of anyone in Washington trying it.  Has anyone ever had success doing this?
I would rather be a conservative nut job, than a liberal with no nuts, and no job!

Maybe not "mountains" but in the ponds behind the old Weyerhauser mill out of Enumclaw a long time ago.  Not even sure if you are still allowed in there - it's been years and I had to walk way back in there even then.  I spooked a bunch of ducks but never did shoot one.

Theres places where you could probably jump some woodys, but not very many ducks in the mountains around here.

You can do it and be successful.  But you walk in shoot once and then your done.   If it isnt in a flyway you probably only going to get the one chance.  I use to in early season jump some ponds up off some gravel roads and thats what my results were.  It is so much better  to decoy and call.

Yes there are a few jump shooting possibilities in the Olympics. There are ponds and lakes that are directly above the Canal that when the hunting pressure is high on the salt, the birds migrate up. I have fair to good luck doing this if I know the salt is getting pounded, and if the ducks are slow, I just take a stroll through the woods and nail a grouse or two. :twocents:
