Blue Mt Foothills
« on: June 21, 2010, 05:48:09 PM »
Anyone draw a Nov. foothills tag? I put my boy in for the east tag and he drew with three points. Should be a fun hunt for a ten year old! I do have some access to private over there that should help but am more familiar with the wilderness than the foothills but we will figure it out.nwhunter

Just curious if anyone sees the irony of this tag.  The Foothills East tag includes all the units on the west side of the Blues, and the Foothills West tag includes all the units on the east side of the Blues.

I figured on the east side of the Blues I may be able to come up with some ideas, but your East tag is on the west, so I'm no good.

I know a few guys that have drawn the tag and killed good bucks.  CoryTDF's dad had it 2 years ago, only got to hunt it for a weekend and shot a decent buck, but not nearly what he could have killed if he had spent some time hunting it harder.  (he freely admits that- he had to get back to the coast for work).
Not a lot of people out hunting so the deer aren't freaked out, the rut will have them moving.  Should be a great hunt, especially if you have some private ground.  I'd spend the summer shooting with your boy.  FInd out what his max effective range is.  Have fun!

That is wierd...I never thought about it before.

Congrats!  I had 6 points and so did one of my sons, the other had 3 points.  All a swing and a miss for us on that tag.  Its a dandy!  You should be able to kill a wallhanger if you put in the time!

In the past these two permits were just called Blue Mtn Foothills A & B. This year they changed it to East and West. Obiously, they got it wrong. Would someone please write to Dave Ware and ask if he knows east from west?

Ya they did have the east and west mixed up but I knew from the regs that we wanted the east. I wish I had more time to put in for this hunt but I have a colorado deer tag that will prevent me from being over there until the last 4-5 days.GMU's are 149,154 and 162-166 whitetail  only. We will defenitely spend some time at the range. I am counting on mtcook to show us around and I have a few leads elsewhere too. nwhunter

You will be missing the best days if you miss the last few, but you should still see plenty of deer, and I am sure your boy will tag the biggest whitetail in his 5th grade class this year.... ;)

Thanks guys for the input we will take any help and connections we can get. I'm sure there are a few guys that may think its kind of a waste of a tag to go to a ten year old but he actually is a huntin fool. He has been following me around since he could walk and passed hunter ed. at seven and has a couple blacktails under his belt and I won't get into the tweety birds and chipmunks he has tagged. His only dissapointment in this tag is that he was hoping to go back into the wenaha! Oh by the way it is the rifle tag and yes we will be keying in on those last 4-5 days of the hunt. Here is a pic of him on top of squaw peak(west wenaha) when he was 8 helpping on a muzzie elk hunt.nwhunter

I, for one, don't think it will be a wasted tag. On the contrary, I would be more worried that he will kill a monster buck and be ruined for life... :chuckle: :chuckle:
You know the area some, so I don't have to tell you to expect long shots.  My boy killed his deer at 290 yards last year.

I think thats a great tag, I don't give 2 *censored*s how old the kid is. I've been putting in for it for 4 years now and haven't drew it. You guys should have a great time and should be able to kill a whopper whitey.

Thought I'd give this a bump as I too have drawn the West tag which of course means east. I have some ideas for this area but haven't been over there in quite some time. Any additional possible input would be appreciated.

Hey did you happen to read the corrections section of the wdfw online :dunno:  don't worry It got me too till i sat down and went through it                                                                            The GMUs for Hunt choice 1101 are correct, but the hunt was mistakenly named “East”.
The GMUs for Hunt choice 1102 are correct, but the hunt was mistakenly named “West”.

I thought I would post a pic of what is out there for the taking on that hunt.  I killed this buck in 2006.  By the way, this was on the west tag.

I drew the muzzleloader permit for the same areas, so I need to put in some time behind the wheel pretty soon.  It's been a long time since I hunted the Blues much, but the prospect of hunting in some snow is really got me going.  I was heading out this weekend to look around, but ended up at work today and the thought of driving around all day in 100 degree heat is depressing.  I do need to get out and find some nice landowners though.  Maybe tomorrow.
