Lucky Day

I went out today to an area where I plan to elk hunt to do a little scouting and had quite a find in this one area that isnt too far from where I got an elk a few years ago. The area is pretty much all old growth timber and is kind of a pain to walk or hike thru if you have 2 legs so I figured Id give it a try as a good work out. I made it about 200 yards from the road ended up tripping over a piece of wood and landed in the moss. When I looked down at what I tripped over, this was the first thing I noticed.  I'm not sure how many people have spent time and tried to actually find one but let me tell you, its kinda like a needle in a haystack ( for me anyhow!) This is only the second one Ive ever found. So, call it good luck or bad luck (considering I fell damn near on my face) , its still a cool find!

I actually found that out for the first time a couple years ago after I bought a book called Plants of the Pacific northwest and decided to look it up one day. Made me kinda dissapointed that it wasnt a true 4 leaf clover but considering how hard it is to find a 4 leaf sorel, I feel like I accomplished the same thing. I just call it 4 leaf clover cause its damn hard to find one anyhow plus they look pretty much the same to the average joe. I actually looked around the house the other day to get the book that I put it in (that way it drys flat) and I cannot find it!  I spent like an hour looking thru every book I have I dont know what the hell happended to it. Really pisses me off!!!!!! I guess its kind of ironic that I had bad luck with it considering the whole story of how I found it and the fact the it not a true 4 leaf clover.

Sorry to wreck your day, but that is not clover.  It's called sour grass and it's very tasty!  Pick some and eat it next time you're out.  It's a nice sour tasting plant that my kids go nuts over.  No BS.

I remember eating lots of these when I was kid! The book I have says that the sour taste is caused by oxalic acid and is potentially harmful when eaten though.  Not really sure how much you have to eat before it gets "harmful" or what their definition of harmful is. Kinda explains why you never see elk or deer eating it.
