lk.washington sockeye?
« on: July 13, 2010, 09:00:51 AM »
Has anyone heard if there is going to be a season this year? It sounds like the salmon are in good numbers this year. Any info would be great!

I looked up the fish count yesterday ( Ballard locks ) and it was only up to 82,000.  They say the run needs to be 350,000 to open the fishery. The estimated total run is suppose to be around 123,000 for 2010.   The fish numbers peaked last week and seem to be getting less each day. Doesn't look good for a sockeye season on Lake Washington from what I see. We can always hope. My family has a blast out there catching them.  Mike

Don't think it has peaked at all....just the opposite.  Last three recorded days....July 6th-July 8th was 10,156, 7431, and 2924 respectively.  First time over 7k and 10k this year.  Numbers should increase this week and next if it is to happen.  Looking good in my opinion......approximately 26k less for a July 8th total than 2006, the last open season.

How can you say it didn't peak last week wacenturion when it went from 3k, 7k, 10k to 7k and back down to 3k, sure seems like the numbers are on a steep decline to me. I hope it takes a turn but to get 350k you would need the numbers to go 10k, 20k 30k and higher per day. I think it will trickle in and come close to the 125k predicted. Since they started coming two weeks ago, seems like the run won't last but another 2 weeks at the most. One other note:  The article I read said the Indians couldn't fish either until / if the numbers are reached. Mike

Not a chance.  It hasn't even hit 6K in the five days since it was at 10K and 7K.  At this point, you'd need to run 10K per day for the next month to get a season, and the run will be pretty much over by then.  Maybe we get to 150K.

I said what I said prior to the counts being posted for the period of July 9th through the 12th.  Yeah they are down the past four days now that the numbers have been posted.....but they could have gone the other way as well.  Just being hopefully optimistic is all based on the previous three day totals.  If I had seen the new numbers I would not have said what I said.

I think some of you guys are putting bad juju on the run...lol. :chuckle:

I have never understood the management practice on this fishery, if 300,000 of anything enter the columbia, its a boom year, but if  340,000 into a single big creek/cedar river, and its not enough. big limits in the columbia, zero fishery in the lake. just dont make sense to me, must be tribes and politics is all i can figure.

That's interesting....never looked at it that way, but you're right.  I'd like to see the answer.....and in the upper Columbia the limit is 6.

Caught 3 last friday, 515 miles up the Columbia from the mouth - was very surprised, still all chrome sides/blue back/ silver heads, only one had nickel-sized green patches behind eye.  Very, VERY tasty fish!
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.
