Choke tubes
« on: July 15, 2010, 09:29:59 PM »
Thinking of picking up a Winchester SX3 this weekend, and curious about some choke recommendations. My cousin has SX2 Ducks Unlimited edition that shoots 3 1/2's with a patternmaster and he swears it kills ducks out farther than any gun he's ever owned. I know it's important to pattern a gun but just thought i'd ask for some input here. I know the Duck Commander guys endorse the kicks ported tubes, but i've read they are retarded loud, just like a ported shotgun and that they'll make your hunting partners flinch every time you pull the trigger. Any info would be appreciated.

the kicks are good and i have run them for a few seasons but they are loud as hell and they will slap the crap out of anyone next to you :chuckle: but they do work well. i like pattern master but hate droping that kinda $ for a choke tube. comp-n-choke makes some fine chokes as well. there are many good ones see what the gun does with the factory choke i am using a factory choke right now in my browing bps and it is a killer combo one of the best patterning guns i have ever shot and owned. then if you shoot it and it does not pattern well then look for a new aftermarket choke. :twocents:

Buy the Briley waterfowl series (duck-LM , goose-IM) choke tubes.
They pattern great and if your worth a *censored* as a waterfowler you dont have to shoot a long ways to kill birds ;)
Lord forgive me for I shoot hens

I use the Briley in my trap guns.  What did we do to kill ducks before all the choke decisions?  Still killed ducks at a fraction of the cost.   ;)  Use the modified that comes with the gun. If your shooting under 40 yards your good to go.  If your pass shooting you may need to make modifications to control the spread.  Then still with the same ammo all season for consistency.

Good to see you again Meats. I still use my factory full choke in my old 870. Never have any trouble knocking down any birds that are 30-yards or closer. :twocents:

I run all my steel through a skeet choke and I'm good out to 30 yards.  I let the rest go   :P

Kind of what I expected to hear. I will definitely be patterning the gun with factory tubes to see how it performs. I just have my cousin telling me i'm stupid not to put a pattern master on that gun, because he loves his. Him and I are pretty competitive with our shooting so i guess that's got part to do with it. Maybe i'll just out shoot him with factory chokes and make him feel dumb. Winchester is offering a $100 shopping spree with purchase of the gun. Think i'll spend it on shells. :)

I have a pattern master... Nothing against it.  Seems to work as advertised.  I just like the idea of shooting them up close, gear down and with a skeet choke and $10/box shells.
