Limited Quota Hunt Montana
« on: July 24, 2010, 07:23:27 AM »
Just wondering if anyone has drawn or hunted units 630,631 in Montana ( Missouri River Breaks/Fort Peck Res. Area). I drew a limited entry Archery only Elk tag, and looking for some info on the area, photos, terrain, weather conditions in Sept. etc. Headed to Hunt elk in Wyoming first of Sept. then headed north to Montana for elk. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks Mossback! :P

Never hunted there, but was hoping to if I had gotten drawn; which I didn't  :'(
I did look over the area closely using Google Earth; just type in Fort Peck and pan around from there to get a great bird's eye view of the Breaks and surrounding areas.  You can also buy a Montana Topo Atlas, either online or at some of the larger book stores.  Lots of private land in the area.  If it rains, be prepared to stay wherever your rig is until it drys out as the gumbo is terrible!  My advice to you is just spend a little time surfing the internet about hunting in that area; there's lots of info out there, including on the MT Fish and Wildlife website.  Good luck, you lucky dog!

Yes, Google Earth is a great tool, and I have done alot of searching upon those areas using google earth. I will be using it again, but it is no substitute for the real on hand experience while being there, thanks. Have one- Delorme atlas topo/geographical Montana state map that shows most of the state, private, etc. lands within Montana. Most of the biologists within the area haven't returned any calls, and I never asked where the elk are, everybody ask's those questions, the elk are there, just interested in the area itself, it wouldn't be a limited quota area if there wasn't any elk. I think the dirt composition must be alot like Wyoming, if it rains your done going off road. Snakes don't bother me, grew up with rattlers, just be cautious and respect them. Leaving for my Wyoming Elk hunt the first of Sept. and headed to Montana after that until about the fourth of October, I should be there during peak rutting, I hope to see some good bulls! ;)
